A documentary wrapped in a very good film!

I already thought the US was a "fourth world country", after seeing this film I only thought: "How much further can you sink as a country?"

As far as I'm concerned an Oscar nomination for Tahar Rahim. And a Razzie for Benedict Cumberbatch as a reward for his lousy impersonation of Sam Elliott. What an annoyance; a thoroughly english man trying to speak american. With another actor I would have given 4.5 stars.

Guantanamo will always be a blot on the American blazon. Driven by feelings of revenge for the 9/11 catastrophe (“The War on Terror”), essential principles of the rule of law were (and are) being trampled underfoot. In the absence of evidence, prisoners are held and tortured for years without charge.

Documentary maker Kevin Macdonald has made this haunting docudrama about the harrowing fortunes of writer Mohamedou Ould Salahi in the penal camp. Alternating with horror and anger I watched his story pass me by.

Impressive, just like the performances by Jodie Foster and Tahar Rahim, two actors around whom you can build a film with confidence, as they have shown before. Benedict Cumberbatch I've seen better and Shailene Woodley is really only in for bacon and beans.

America is still a wonderful country. Land of the free, home of the brave - but none of the so highly regarded values, which the kids at school have to recite every morning, are supposed to apply to the rest of the world. And also within your own borders, if you are not in the right group then the laws no longer apply, it seems.

And yet every now and then there are a few individuals who want to break through that, and that's what this film is about. The absurd, unreal story of Slahi being held on Guantanamo Bay on an unsubstantiated, vague suspicion with no prospects in degrading conditions. Against the background of what we do know about Abu Ghraib, the 'dark sites', 'enhanced interrogation' and other war crimes of the US - because of course they are just plain stupid. Not that the US itself can deal with it civilized, which is why they are still so hard on Assange.

As a film a bit difficult to judge, the power of the story transcends the ordinary aspects of the film a bit too much. Still, Foster is impressive as always. And it's nice that we can see that she is getting older, that deserves enormous respect. And Macdonald also deserves praise, if only for the courage to choose such a loaded subject, and also to find the mastery in making it a neutral and objective film. Great job.
