Russell Crowe is writing the script, directing and starring in this mediocre film. The second film he directs. Crowe previously directed The Water Diviner (2014). Not a cinematographic tour de force either, but acceptable cinema. He never wrote a script before. At least not a script that was made into a film. After seeing Poker Face, you can at least say that Crowe is a decent actor…

In principle, the film focuses on a poker game and seems to be heading in the direction of a psychological thriller. That part of the scenario is promising. The game of poker as a means to expose the secrets of the players. Nice idea. However, the revelations are not very startling. Neither do the characters. Their being is reduced to their manifestation or to the quality that goes with it. Rather easy writing, while the dramatic potential has much more depth.

Things escalate out of nowhere when suddenly other characters show up and provide the film with action. A considerable break in style that makes you wonder why Crowe thought it was a good idea to build in such a spasmodic distraction. A riddle to me. The psychology of the poker game was much more exciting.

And so Poker Face disappears in the standard thriller category. Much ado about nothing. Not interesting.

Good basic idea, mediocre execution. Crowe does not promote himself as a director and should have stayed exclusively in front of the camera, is the main conclusion. The film dates from 2022, so it seems unlikely to me, but after seeing it you almost think that they have suffered a lot from the corona crisis: almost every scene is quickly frayed, the director does not take time to properly record his story. build, elaborate and complete, making the whole thing look annoyingly sloppy and uninspired. And then what looks promising on paper becomes almost a torment for the viewer in practice. Watching in amazement, not worth an expensive movie ticket.

Bad movie but I still enjoyed it in the end. The decoration is tasteful, the pacing is good and then I forgive a lot. The script is quite weak with simple psychology, the characters and their concerns are written purely for the plot, the end is there before you know it (although that's actually quite refreshing how quickly the movie suddenly ends), dialogues sometimes lousy to but above all to give a lot of information (when Crowe is standing with his daughter, very consciously say that she has been watching his only child and the deceased mother for 10 years, then at least the public knows that too) and more of that kind of craziness. The last scene is suddenly there and does nothing else. Anyway, Crowe as an actor can be done better and RZA is also nice, he exudes something of calmness, authority and wisdom and that is nice. And besides that, I had quite a nice time in the cinema. And that's so much more wade than all the bad moments. 3.0*.
