“That wasn't very sporting, using real bullets.”

Enjoyed this adventurous film full of speed, action, mystery, beautiful locations, humor and romance. Hitchcock's very own James Bond film, in which nothing is as it seems. North by Northwest has some exciting scenes with the scene between the wheat fields and the last part at Mount Rushmore, but it is mainly a mysterious adventure film in which Cary Grant finds herself from one predicament to the next.

Excellent acting work by Grant, who is assisted by strong actors such as Mason, Carroll, Landau and of course Eva Marie Saint as the mysterious Eve Kendall. The film also has a lot of humorous scenes, with the drunk/drugged car scene and the auction scene as highlights. The final section at Mount Rushmore is also a rousing climax. The well-known Hitchcock twist is revealed early on, so that you can enjoy a wonderful spy movie for the rest.

Is and remains one of the most entertaining and funst films ever made. Right from the first scene, things kick in as Thornhill is mistaken for the spy Kaplan and lands headlong into a game bigger than him. The car chase with a drunken Thornhill behind the wheel, the train journey, the plane in the cornfield, the spectacular denouement at Mount Rushmore; North by Northwest is full of hugely inventive, exciting, crazy and entertaining sequences. Have you heard anyone describe this movie as simply the most entertaining ever, perhaps rivaled only by the original Star Wars, and I can only agree.
The plot is watertight, simple and extremely effective. Camera work is Hitchcock at the top of his game. And especially the acting performances still have to be mentioned. Cary Grant plays a very charismatic and funny role, and carries the film with all the ease in the world. However, the stunning Eva Marie Saint supports him well in this, and both have excellent chemistry that is contagious. Especially the scenes on the train are a highlight of this.
What is remarkable is how unaged this film seems. Has withstood the time maybe ten times better than 3/4 of the Bond movies.

I really have yet to see a lot of Hitchcock, but I would be surprised if there is another one that is better and more fun than North by Northwest. Everything is right here; some goofy scenes even just heighten the atmosphere rather than drag it down. Truly one of the funniest movies ever.

The best Bond film without James Bond. A few years before Sean Connery started one of the biggest franchises ever in the role of 007, with North by Northwest you already had a spy film that would have an influence on the Bond films. Hitchcock is therefore the master of suspense and he sees in the peak of his career. And you notice that in the cast & crew who do their best for a director with a name. Ernest Lehman was driven to write the ultimate 'Hitchcock' story. He made more classics like West Side Story, Sound of Music and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Cary Grant was even mentioned as a potential Bond actor. It wouldn't have been bad. You also have Eva Marie Saint, James Mason and Martin Landau who play a Bond girl, enemy and henchman avant la lettre.

The film is especially captivating as Cary Grant's character is mistaken for someone else and he becomes entangled in a suspenseful spy story. It is in line with, for example, Our Man in Havana. The combination of the well-known tension of Hitchcock and the necessary action with a touch of humor, make the film a strong classic. A film with familiar scenes, a fascinating story, top actors and visually absolutely worth it.
