There is an unearthly monster that haunts today's cinema and we call it CGI (Computer-Generated Imagery). 'Life' (2017) is yet another rip-off of original genre classics such as 'Alien' (1979) and 'The Thing' (1982), but this monster too has been neatly smoothed out with computer effects that lack any sense of spaciousness or presence. Even remakes with classic movie monsters cannot escape the provocative constitution of this modern succubus. The tragedy is that 'Life' (2017) in terms of set design creates an excellent illusion of claustrophobic spaces and zero gravity, as in a spacecraft. But I've laughed out loud a number of times at the droll CGI monster with its generic and predictable scavenger hunt among the crew. And the film started off so well with that mixture of wonder and fear at the discovery of extraterrestrial life and the earthly fascination with the astronaut existence. Is it just me, by the way, or did I really recognize Biblical allusions in some shots? At one point, the Last Supper (when the astronauts sit down at the table) and later the Savior's crucifixion. This may also be far-fetched of me.

I really couldn't do anything with this. I don't care that it's an Alien rip-off (and yes, it is); You can do that if done properly. But this was just incredibly soulless, on every level. The cast doesn't captivate at all, not a single character really. In any case, I didn't care who would survive. The effects, especially on the alien itself, are too obviously CGI. There is no tension in the print, the kills are bland and tame. The characters make stupid decisions all the time (think: Prometheus). And it also took too long, but that's probably due to the fact that the film didn't grab me at all. No, actually I can only be positive about the ending itself. Surprisingly not, but dark, and also the only moment that they dare to go off the beaten track. No, one to quickly forget. 1.5*.
