Level 16 is a film that constantly made me feel like I had seen it several times before. I therefore found it unoriginal and at many times a bit sleep-inducing. The simple plot is not really made exciting and does not get new angles anywhere.

Cool.

Only the second Esterhazy movie I see, and so far they're both probably going to be my favorites. The Banana Splits Movie was a fun, gory horror/comedy at the time. This one is a completely different movie, but better in execution and overall very cool.

Strange that it says "rebellious teens" in the summary because rebellious is against the rules here. That is what makes the film so interesting. It's a very special environment which in turn makes it very intriguing. It never gets a little boring.

Douglas is doing very well. The actresses regularly get weak dialogues, and that is also one of the few criticisms of the film. Unrealistic dialogues. Now the environment is not exactly realistic, but the course of the story actually makes it quite realistic.

The 102 minutes went by very quickly. Esterhazy seems to know her films well. Here the result is a cold, intriguing film that may be a bit slow, but never falls short. Perhaps not optimally exciting, but optimally fascinating.

There should be more of these kinds of films. This is certainly not a horror film like her later film. Just a subtle mystery/science fiction indeed.

Level 16 actually gives exactly what you can expect from it: no more and no less. OK, maybe a little less. It is clearly a low budget film: the locations are limited and cheaply worked out and relatively unknown actresses have been used (there are almost no actors in the film). Still, the acting is basically fine, except for the 'guard': man, man, man, what a cliché that is put down and it's all over the top. This is also emphasized by the way of filming. Furthermore, everyone puts down a reasonable stereotype, but it can all just pass.

The story is unclear at first. Towards the end of the film, it is actually immediately completely revealed. That is a pity and should have been done in steps. The beginning of the film gets a bit boring towards the halfway point. The last part completely changes the atmosphere of the film and it becomes more action. Here too you are bombarded with cliché images that we have seen so often. There are also the necessary 'hey, this isn't right' moments in the film and at the end I wondered if this whole operation couldn't be set up much more simply. It all feels a bit far fetched. Unfortunately, the ending is rushed. The time was up or the budget was up, no idea, but you are still left with questions that I would have liked to see answered.

All in all - as I mentioned - the film actually gives what you can expect from such a film. It's definitely not top notch. It is not original (perhaps the core of the story, but not how it is worked out). It's not really exciting. It's mediocre from start to finish. Therefore 3 stars.
