The sequel that no one was waiting for unfortunately lives up to expectations. After 45 minutes, Godzilla has a great opportunity to kill Kong and by then you're already hoping he puts you out of your misery. Unfortunately Godzilla turns out to be sporty and because of that you have to watch another hour and listen to subpar special effects, characters from the recycle bin and the most terrible dialogues. Kong protects humanity after a fist bump with a deaf and dumb girl. Naturally! All the clichés of the genre are covered, as well as a large amount of ridiculous twists. Yay!

Whew, even a movie where everything revolves around two fighting titan beasts they still manage to make it boring. Or maybe because the humanity and soul has been completely left out. Instead, we've got some cliché good guys and bad guys that should give it all some meaning. Something with Hollow Earth, a supercharged Thor weapon, Mecha-Zillas in Hong Kong and I know what.

Hollow Earth (and how they travel there) is completely ridiculous, by the way. There are no authorities in charge. No scientists who monitor closely. No preparations or tests with those HEAVs vehicles, no oxygen helmets, no protocols? Astronaut training against G-forces? No, don't be so hard. Just buckle up and go with that banana. Take that deaf-mute child with you, it will probably come in handy. Because yes, someone needs to be able to communicate with Kong... The fact that he can dexterously sign language and mumble HOME now makes him a kind of oversized, furry Super-ET.

Then just put your mind to zero and watch the battles. Yes, I'm sorry, but I think it's just a waste of all that animation/CG talent that then works overtime in such a studio for starvation wages to make everything, while the writer just lazily tells his story in one evening just before the deadline cobbled together.

If only the fighting brought something new, but after yet another neon-lit skyscraper collapsing, you've seen it too. That Hong Kong was eventually wiped off the face of the world, who cares. As long as Kong can live comfortably in Hollow Earth. Do the people who work there in the observation post now take the intercity to work every day or how is it going exactly... oh there the credits are already rolling, never mind.

2*

This film has two extremes: finally decent battles with large monsters, in daylight, with a lot of destruction and well-organized with many panoramic shots. Delicious. That's why I watch these kinds of movies. And the film scores all points on that.
But also a completely idiotic story, no interesting characters (who are mainly ballast with them and irritate and bore) and also a whole world that is no longer believable. Two big monsters? I can go with that. The whole hollow earth? Not that one. In short: the film was always waiting for another grotesque clash between the monsters and a delicious dessert at the end, but the film also has a lot of long yawning moments. 2.5*.
