Garland

So much good intention in 1 film and then it just doesn't quite convince me.
Garland immediately seems to opt for more atmosphere than character development. It's a smart choice. But he does make 1 mistake and that is that he does not dare to go all the way. He still wants to explain a bit more than is necessary by means of flashbacks, and in dialogues he wants to give us the audience something to hold on to. The problem with that is that it loses the atmosphere. Dialogues seem a bit steely, characters are a bit simple (the tough chick, the smart chick) it's just too cliche but again too little cliche developed.

It sounds like harsh criticism. Garland is an engaging director and the film isn't bad at all. But it could have become a modern classic imo. This is especially evident in the last act of the film. If Portman continues alone. There the film finally goes full atmosphere and with the soundtrack of Moderat I mainly thought, why could/shouldn't this be anymore....

The film certainly does enough good and gets a very nice score. The last part made me doubt 4 stars for a while. But what came before that made just too little impression.

3.5 stars. Wondering if Garland can do more, it's not too superlative I hoped after Deus Ex.

Mmm.

With Ex Machina, Garland had shown that he could contribute something to the sci-fi genre. Annihilation is in itself a bit more daring, but then it turns out to go wrong fairly quickly. Quite a few wrong choices are made, while the potential was really there.

In terms of structure enough material for a great genre film, but then you have to do something with it. Garland doesn't dare to embrace it and instead focuses more on characters and drama. They take the pace and atmosphere out of the film several times, while there is actually little to no depth in it. What you get is a lot of heaviness in a movie that shouldn't have been.

And when it's time for the genre elements, it's all a bit disappointing. The bubble effect is not really exciting, the mutations are rather boring and that 90s video clip CG at the end is a joke. The intended effect sometimes reminded me of Toy Reanimator, which looked 100 times better with its mini budget. Visually, this film is just very disappointing.

The soundtrack isn't you either. Some tame music, which actually add little to no atmosphere. It looked more like it was plucked from a sample library of music with no rights than it was really a serious movie score. The film also falls short on that point.

Where it should score, relatively little happens, where the film wants to score, it doesn't work. The film is saved by its set-up, general curiosity (but that whole ending at the lighthouse is also stupid) and my love for these kinds of films, but in terms of execution, acting and impact it is really bluster.

More than usual that they don't want to release this in theaters. Nice to catch up on Netflix once in a while, but Garland would do better for his next film, because he really isn't suitable for this kind of work.

2.5*

Despite the previous reactions - with the exception of Arri - I consider this film to be a very well thought-out Sci-Fi with realistic elements, a good suspense and decorated with beautiful effects. My advice is:

Watch and judge for yourself what you think. I thought the movie was beautiful.
