"You Can't Escape It!"

A rocket launched by the team led by Prof. Quatermass, lands in the English countryside. Of the three members of the crew, two have mysteriously disappeared. The third, barely alive, undergoes a terrible metamorphosis, turning into a monstrous 'thing'. When he escapes and is chased by Inspector Lomax, he begins killing animals and humans to fuel his transformation. Quatermass realizes that this is the way "aliens" have chosen to take over Earth.

Early English attempt at SF horror.
The British were the first to send a rocket with astronauts into space and upon return, only 1 of the three astronauts was left.
Halfway through the survivor merges with a cactus and goes on a killer rampage.
Extremely strong film with some great stop-motion scenes.

Nice oldie. I didn't know anything beforehand, so you can join the characters as they try to figure out what to do with the poor astronaut who survived the journey. Quatermass itself in particular is one not to be forgotten. Gorgeous bully who half-snarls trying to protect his research and experiment. Nowadays, of course, it's a bit lame, the escape, but otherwise an entertaining film from start to finish that manages to deliver a number of scenes. Such as the images of what happened in the rocket. Or the girl who wants invisible tea. The effects surrounding the transformation are still okay and it also has an economical playing time. Great filler for viewers who love.. Things.

With this film Hammer definitively put itself on the map. It was a reworking of a six-part BBC TV series, although it went a lot further than the series. Hence the X rating that was playfully flirted with during promotion (and therefore in the title of the film). The kind of marketing that Hammer would also apply to the successor X The Unknown.

A review for me and it's even better than I thought I remembered. From start to finish it has a brisk pace where Brian Donlevy as Prof. Quatermass thunders through. He comes across as very antipathetic and narcissistic: it is difficult to sympathize with him. The story further reflects current events at the time with the competition between the major nations to conquer space. The fear of the unknown should not be far-fetched, figuratively speaking, because space is of course a long way away.

This is classic science fiction. A solid production that also manages not to come across as clumsy. This is not a camp. The practical effects hold up well. On a big screen in the 1950s this must have been a great viewing experience.
