Well, quite a nice claustrophobic thriller in which a woman undergoes a race against time to survive in a closed room. With only a HAL, here called MILO, she tries to find out who she is and what she is doing there.

Panic and disbelief takes hold of her and her emotions come across quite well on screen. I had the full attention of the film and I wanted to know what was going to happen next. Not easy by the way to realize this in a repetitive framework with only one character and one location.

Tension and involvement were certainly present. So not bad at all. Not top notch, just solid. Rounding up, 3.5*.

The futuristic Buried.

According to descriptions, Alexandre Aja had wanted to stay in America with this project, but due to circumstances he had to return to his home country, where he has been delivering this product since Haute Tension. And Oxygene goes beyond expectations again. The start is default; how in god's name did I end up here and above all.... how in god's name do I get out of here again? This is about Liz, who is strongly played here by Melanie Laurent.

What soon becomes apparent is that panic and fear are the worst counselors. She only has a small percentage of oxygen left and the above causes that to increase even faster. At her fingertips she has only a computer voice to talk to and she has to dig into her memory.

And here's where the movie keeps getting us on the wrong track, eventually making you think it has three endings. The psychological aspect; the cynicism, despair and perseverance that Liz expresses, the telephone conversations, the final memories and the conclusion. It makes it seem that this is a very interesting project in which Aja wants to remain very topical in the meantime. Algorithms, social media ahead of its time, and of course... a potentially deadly variant of a pandemic (a new corona mutation?)

The film fluctuates nicely between the claustrophobia in the capsule and the hazy memories in France and nothing is as it seems. The memories are very strong.... Wait a minute... Memories????

For me, Aja has again succeeded well in writing down a project. No popcorn blockbuster this time. The editing is stunning, the twist hits your chest, and it never gets boring. Welcome back to France, Aja!

By the way: Liz was born on January 3, 2003 in Stockholm. Exactly the same birth data of Greta Thunberg. Chance???

4.5*

Trust in Aja! As far as I'm concerned, one of the better genre filmmakers of this generation. Extremely consistent in quality for so long and at the same time constantly looking for something new for itself. Although scenarios that are confined to a small, closed location were a stumbling block for many directors, Aja takes them with remarkable ease. The futuristic setting (in the context of 'trying something new') is the biggest selling point and opens doors that you normally 'miss'. Communication, information and more space to present turns (in his own little world) in a relatively logical manner. Well dosed, strong performances and a nice ending.
