I tried to watch this 'classic' a long time ago, but the fake monkeys in the beginning and the excruciatingly slow pace made me give up within half an hour. So I tried again today for the big screen: maybe I could muster the concentration. But it was a tough one. The film is really sleep-inducing slow, often only the beautiful music (by Ligeti and of course the 'sunrise' by Richard Strauss) keeps you awake somewhat. Possibly the intention of the film is to put you in a kind of trance or hypnosis: after all, the film is from 1968 and in any case the ending is quite psychedelic. But it doesn't get me into a trance or hypnosis: it just awakens my sleep. The film usually has no tension whatsoever in terms of story: only the part when HAL tries to take over power is a bit exciting.

What the film shows is a nice vision of the past and future. The core of the story in my interpretation is simple (with the music of Richard Strauss as the milestone): there is a sunrise with the origin of the universe and life, then there is another sunrise with man (consciousness) who will conquer the Earth and then the universe with his tools. But his last tool, the computer, threatens to conquer man (which is again a very topical theme). Then, of course, there's the mysterious monolith that seems to be revered as a totem by early humans (symbolizing the beginnings of religion?) and interpreted by modern humans in the film as a sign of extraterrestrial life. The last time there is a sunrise at the monolith, perhaps to indicate that the next step in evolution is beyond Earth or even beyond time and space (in a higher consciousness, for 1968).

Finally got around to watching this movie. All in all, I really liked it, with the main pain point being the long duration. There could have easily been an hour without touching the atmosphere. Every scene is stretched endlessly, so that the attention is always slackened a bit. In terms of special effects, however, this is a pillar in film history, unbelievable that this comes from 1968, when no moon mission had even happened yet. The music is nice and appropriate but sometimes a bit too prominent. In terms of story, it took a long time to make ends meet, but HAL's infidelity (or just not) cuts in and is nerve-wracking. I had a bit of a hard time with the ending. Maybe just a little spiritual.

Beautiful movie! Breathtakingly beautiful images and the film is audiovisually very good. Very much enjoyed 2001: A Space Odyssey, so you see again how simple it can be. Images and sound say so much. unbelievable. Much better than the 'modern' Interstellar. Kubrick is truly a master and has certainly set an example for later filmmakers. Bought A Clockwork Orange on blu ray recently, so it's time to review it... thought it was very strong the first time. But I think a Kubrick movie can only get better with a second viewing
