W.E. plot

"Their affair ignited a scandal. Their passion brought down an empire."

1936, England. American Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough) conquers the heart of King Edward VIII (James D'Arcy). However, Edward is told by the church and the Prime Minister that he cannot marry Wallis and remain king at the same time. He decides to resign for the woman he loves. Once married, they are known as the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and many consider them the most romantic couple of the century. Parallel to this story is the romance of Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish) in New York in 1998. When she ends up in an unhappy marriage with a successful psychiatrist, she becomes obsessed with the story of King Edward VIII. When Sotheby's auctions off various personal belongings from the Windsors, she tries to understand the romance between Wallis and Edward through the items that belonged to the couple.

Years ago someone who had experienced the Edward Simpson case spoke to me and his story showed how negatively this issue was viewed by the public and how the name "Simpson" was spoken with a certain contempt or mockery.

This phenomenon is strongly emphasized in the film. It was a time when "the heart" had no chance against morality and decency...

Madonna's film is ambitious and in a sense capricious and it is this capriciousness in the beginning when both storylines are released somewhat abruptly that may play tricks on the viewer. Afterwards there are nevertheless enough moments to delight in the beautiful style of the film and the strong acting of the main characters.

The interesting thing about this is that a well-known story is told from a different point of view. Wallis Simpson is usually presented as the adulteress and wicked seductress, but here you get a completely different picture of her. George VI was presented in The King's Speech as a hero with a flaw, but here he is a common stammerer on the fringe.

Abbie Cornish plays the main character in the present, an unhappy wife who comes to identify with Simpson. There are a few fantasy scenes where past and present meet. The music selection is rather eclectic.

In 1998, Wally Winthrop [Abbie Cornish] attends an auction of belongings of the British King Edward VIII and the American Wallis Simpson, the woman for whom he abdicated the throne in late 1936. Wally's life is mirrored by that of Wallis [Andrea Riseborough], with Madonna and co-writer Alek Kershishian mainly wondering what price she had to pay for her relationship with Edward. 25 years after her only good film (Desperately Seeking Susan), we actually discover that Madonna is a worthy, occasionally creative director. This is not very profound, but it is certainly entertaining.
