"Easier said than done."
Matt Sullivan, 28, is going through a sexual crisis. He has one adventure after another, but has fallen prey to anxiety attacks. He thinks this is due to his overly active sexual life. So he decides to take a vow of chastity: he abstains from all sexual activities for 40 days and 40 nights. And he seems to succeed. Matt is buzzing with energy and has his urges under control. Until one day he meets Erica.

“I mean, he used to be kinda cute but now he's just twitchy.”
Nice movie. The whole premise is ridiculous, but the actors still manage to make something out of it. And 40 Days and 40 Nights is a smooth film with a number of successful jokes. Hartnett isn't the right actor for this kind of nonsense, but he doesn't do a bad job. Sossamon is a beautiful actress and has a great chemistry with Hartnett. But to be honest that is also the only bright spot in this otherwise mediocre romcom.

Not very annoying, but too long. It may just last 96 minutes, but the pattern is now known and the film does not surprise anywhere. Characters are okay, a single joke succeeded and as a whole you can still watch it from the couch, but that's about it. The film is eventually only stretched with some plot twists, otherwise the film could have been finished after 70 minutes. 2.5*.

Meh how bad.
Mainly because of the absurd American morality about sex, religion and everything that has to do with it. What a strange country that is, and what strange films that occasionally produces - and not in a positive sense.
On the plus side, however, Sossamon is quite cute, and there are a lot of very pretty girls around. But from about half way on, the film derails into too many silly jokes and pranks. Perhaps the makers were also done with the basic data.
Also to report an early but very small role by Maggie Gyllenhaal. Don't bother looking for that.
