Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson says he isn't totally done with making big blockbusters despite his focus turning to smaller projects.
He is one of the most popular WWE Superstars of all time and was a key figure in the most successful period in the company's history, known as 'The Attitude Era'.
His popularity soared to the point where he had arguably outgrown the business, which meant a career in Hollywood beckoned. He would make his movie debut with a cameo role in The Mummy Returns and that would earn him a starring role playing the same character in The Scorpion King.
Over the last decade, he has become one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood, starring in huge projects like Moana, the Fast and Furious and Jumanji franchises and Black Adam.
Itt was recently announced that he would be starring in The Smashing Machine, a biopic about MMA legend Mark Kerr. The acceptance of that role is part of Johnson's new career direction focusing on more human movies.
"I’m at a point in my career where I want to push myself in ways that I’ve not pushed myself in the past," he told Variety.
"I’m at a point in my career where I want to make films that matter, that explore a humanity and explore struggle and pain."
The Rock isn't done with blockbusters
Johnson's next movie will be a live-action adaptation of Moana in which he will reprise his role of Maui, so he isn't completely leaving the blockbuster game.
"I want to be clear not to say that this is an abandonment of big, four-quadrant movies. I love making them, and there is tremendous value and importance in them," he continued,
"But there’s a time and a place for them. I’m at this point in my career where I want more. And I don’t mean I want more box office. I mean I want more humanity."
