Mark Hamill doesn't think he will ever play Luke Skywalker in Star Wars again.
The iconic actor made a stunning return in his most famous role in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, appearing in The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker.
In The Last Jedi, Luke seemingly passes on and becomes one with The Force after projecting himself into a battle with his nephew Kylo Ren.
It would appear that Luke's narrative cycle has come to an end, and Hamill agrees with that suggestion.
“I had my time, and that’s good. But that’s enough,” he said during an interview with CBS.
“Well, you never say never. I just don’t see any reason to. Let me put it that way: I mean, they have so many stories to tell, they don’t need Luke anymore.”
Hamill infamously criticised some of the creative decisions relating to his character, particularly how Luke effectively became a hermit on a remote island after allowing Kylo Ren to turn to the dark side.
“I said to Rian, ‘Jedis don’t give up.’ I mean, even if had a problem, he would maybe take a year to try and regroup, but if he made a mistake, he would try to right that wrong, so right there, we had a fundamental difference,” Hamill said at the time.
“But it’s not my story anymore, it’s somebody else’s story and Rian needed me to be a certain way to make the ending effective. That’s the crux of my problem. Luke would never say that.”
Hamill wasn't sure how to play Luke Skywalker.
In the interview with CBS, Hamill recalled how he wasn't sure how to play Luke in his initial audition for A New Hope as he hadn't been given a completed script.
"The problem was they didn't give us a whole script," he said.
"And yeah, I couldn't figure out, is this, like, a send-up of Flash Gordon or whatever? You couldn't tell, 'cause nobody talks like this! And I was asking Harrison, 'cause he had been in American Graffiti. I said, 'You know George. Is this, like, a joke? Should we send it up? Make fun of it?' 'Whatever. Get it done.' So, he was no help!"
