Matroesjka's plot

Matroesjka's is about Raymond Van Mechelen, a Belgian trafficker, who recruits young Russian and Lithuanian women in Vilnius with the help of local talent scouts. After all, Eastern European women are very popular with Western brothel visitors. Belgium is a dream transit country. The police are slow and the immigration service corrupt. Those who dare, can always rustle something up. In Cyprus, girls in local strip clubs first receive 'dance training'. Then they travel to Belgium, where they are accommodated in the nightclub of the Van Mechelen gang and then sold on to business associates in Belgium and the Netherlands. The police keep aloof. After all, 'Russian whores' are 'not a priority'. It's been a thriving business for a long time, but the latest batch of girls is causing the gang a lot of headaches. And then there's a remorseful debtor and an annoying investigative reporter. When things suddenly take a turn for the worse, tensions between the gang members run high.

Vlaamse poging om in te haken op het succes van de duistere misdaadseries uit die tijd. Van wat ik mij herinner is het een tikkeltje fragmentarisch: veel kleine losstaande verhaaltjes in plaats van echt een sterke opbouw. Veel functioneel naakt en gratuit geweld.

Flemish attempt to capitalize on the success of the dark crime series from that time. From what I remember it's a bit fragmentary: lots of small standalone stories rather than a really strong build-up. Lots of functional nudity and gratuitous violence.

Legendarische personages als Ray Van Mechelen, fantastische dialogen en gesprekken, al even legendarische nevenpersonages van onder andere Manou Kersting en Tom Van Dijck, geweldige scenario's, kortom tragikomedie op zijn best. Jammer wel dat het tweede seizoen bijlange niet het niveau haalt van dit fantastische eerste seizoen.

Legendary characters such as Ray Van Mechelen, fantastic dialogues and conversations, equally legendary secondary characters by Manou Kersting and Tom Van Dijck, among others, great scenarios, in short, tragicomedy at its best. It is a pity that the second season is nowhere near the level of this fantastic first season.

Keiharde en geslaagde kijk in het leven van een bende mensenhandelaars en hun weerloze slachtoffers. Iedere aflevering bergt meer dan één ontzettende voorstelling van dit afgrijselijk wereldje. Spannend en onthutsend en uitblinkend door het spetterend spel van nagenoeg de ganse cast al is de act van Peter Van Den Begin toch het sterkst.

A gritty and successful look into the lives of a gang of human traffickers and their defenseless victims.

Each episode contains more than one horrifying depiction of this gruesome world.

Exciting and disturbing and excelling due to the dazzling acting of almost the entire cast, although Peter Van Den Begin's acting is the strongest.
