Beef plot

'Beef' follows the aftermath of a traffic incident between two strangers. Danny Cho, a failed contractor with a bad temper, goes head to head with Amy Lau. She is a self-made entrepreneur with a picturesque life. The growing stakes of their feud unravels their lives and relationships, bringing out the worst in them.

De reviews die hij krijgt zijn overal geweldig goed dus het zal aan mij liggen maar het was bij mij maar af en toe een beetje leuk, ik heb persoonlijk al betere films en series gezien met zwarte humor, dan denk ik bv aan A simple plan en Fargo en zeker de serie Exit. Ik had er veel meer van verwacht en was zelfs blij dat het afgelopen was....

The reviews he gets are great everywhere so it will be just me but it was only a bit fun for me now and then, I've personally seen better films and series with black humour, then I think of A simple plan and Fargo and certainly the Exit series. I expected much more from it and was even glad it was over....

Goede acteurs, maar ik kan mij totaal niet inleven in de gang van zaken en in de motieven van de protagonisten. Wie gaat er nu zo tekeer? Bovendien overheerst al in de tweede aflevering het dramatische aspect en verdwijnt de humor naar de achtergrond. Heel onderhoudend is het allemaal niet.

Good actors, but I can't empathize at all with the course of events and the motives of the protagonists. Who's going on like this now? Moreover, already in the second episode the dramatic aspect predominates and the humor fades into the background. It's not very entertaining at all.

Het 10-delige Amerikaanse Beef gaat over botsende werelden van maatschappelijke klassen. De kloof tussen arm en rijk, kansloos en kansrijk. Met de road rage als openingssequence wordt vol vaart de toon gezet. Danny Cho (Steven Yeun) heeft een vaag klusbedrijfje en voelt zich verantwoordelijk voor zijn inwonende broer en ouders die nog in Korea wonen. Amy Lau (Ali Wong) is interieur-styliste. Ze staat bovendien op het punt een enorme zakendeal te sluiten. Beef richt zich vrijwel volledig op de Aziatisch-Amerikaanse gemeenschap, een originele invalshoek. De eerste afleveringen van Beef doen met satire, maatschappijkritiek en hypnotiserende geluiden een heel klein beetje denken aan The White Lotus. In deze zwarte komedie (Beef is straattaal voor ruzie) echter geen vakantieresorts. Het volle scenario van executive producer Lee Sung Jin zorgt in de eerste vier afleveringen voor een hoog tempo. Onderhoudend, maar tegelijk: veel drukte om weinig. Halverwege gaat het tempo flink omlaag en veranderd Beef van koers. Veel gepsychologiseer, flashbacks, emoties en opdravende demonen uit het verleden van de hoofdkarakters. Kortom, een mixed bag. Ondanks het goede acteren kan Beef niet overtuigen.

The 10-part American Beef is about colliding worlds of social classes. The gap between rich and poor, chanceless and promising. With the road rage as the opening sequence, the tone is set at full speed. Danny Cho (Steven Yeun) runs a sketchy handyman business and feels responsible for his live-in brother and parents who still live in Korea. Amy Lau (Ali Wong) is an interior stylist. She is also about to make a huge business deal. Beef focuses almost entirely on the Asian-American community, an original angle.

The first episodes of Beef are slightly reminiscent of The White Lotus with satire, social criticism and hypnotic sounds. However, no holiday resorts in this black comedy (beef is slang for quarrel). The full screenplay by executive producer Lee Sung Jin ensures a high pace in the first four episodes. Entertaining, but at the same time: a lot of fuss about little. Halfway through the pace slows down considerably and Beef changes course. Lots of psychologizing, flashbacks, emotions and surfacing demons from the past of the main characters. In short, a mixed bag. Despite the good acting, Beef cannot convince.
