Reviews & comments

It takes some getting used to the new faces and not all episodes are equally exciting, but all in all this is another great season. Olivia Colman quickly convinces completely in the lead role and Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip is also excellent. Some episodes are also among the best of the series to date. Visually it all looks fantastic again and the music is more beautiful than ever. In short, bring on the fourth series, because this is so good to feast on.

I also had to switch. Took me a few episodes to get used to the new protagonists. I thought Prince Philip and Princess Margaret played better in seasons 1 and 2, especially Philip is just an annoying guy actually. And also his voice that is suddenly so much deeper. It felt pretty unbelievable at first. Even Queen Colman (which I've been very high on since Broadchurch) took some getting used to, but Claire Foy had also set the bar extremely high. Prince Charles was also very well interpreted. And I also think Princess Anne is very witty.

Also great episodes. I particularly liked 3, 6, 7 and 8.

I found the story of the coup somewhat less so, I was actually surprised that the kidnapping of Princess Anne was not mentioned.

New season, new cast. It takes me a while to get used to it, but it's okay pretty quickly. There are some accent differences. Elizabeth is more distant and less empathetic, Philip comes across as more of an aristocrat. The new Mountbatten is amazing, what a voice that man has! The only actor I turned out to know was Bonham and that made her role feel a bit strange: that face reminds me of so many other roles. But she soon got used to it.

Apart from the fact that I have to get used to the new cast, this season suffers a bit from the problem that the events depicted and the characters are not the most appealing. Next season Diana and Thatcher will only be around the corner. Although Prime Minister Wilson suits me more as a politician like Thatcher, the latter is of course much more interesting. I think Aberfan is the most impressive episode, Moondust about the stirrings of the soul of Philip is a close second. Coup is interesting because of Mountbatten's role, but the queen's horse nonsense is not for me at all. Funniest scene of the season is where Anne is questioned by family about Camilla. She is amazingly sharp.

In the end, a tad less than the previous two seasons. 2.5*.
