An existential fable about the nature of good and evil against the overwhelmingly beautiful snowscapes that once put the original 'Fargo' (1996) on the map. Cinematographically and technically, it is an epic epic, of a level that few television series have the budget and resources to come close to. And that while it also has its own individuality due to the strange combination of crazy characters in the pitch-black darkness of an unsparing crime story. Billy Bob Thornton, in particular, is unparalleled as a contemporary Anansi, who exploits the weaknesses and fears of his victims for personal gain. His exact motivation remains obscure, but it seems he takes devilish pleasure in pushing people to their own demise.

And yet I got into the series less than I would have liked. After a great first episode, which I watched with tears in my eyes because it came in hard, it loses its momentum somewhat when it puts the cards on the table right away. In a way it's nice that they didn't opt for the usual formula of a murder mystery, but the result is that you know at an early stage that Molly Solverson has almost all the way around how the fork is, while she was trolling by the incompetence and male ego of her superiors. After that point, the series pays exhausting attention to the existential doubts of its "good" main characters Molly and Gus, or to the funny antics of Chief Bill Oswalt and roguish hit man duo Mr. Numbers and Mr. wrench. I couldn't help but feel that too little material has been spun out over more episodes than the limited data allows.

To remember: the sparkling script, the admirable care for detail, both visually and narratively, the fine editing, the many strongly suggestive passages, including the gory and the sensational ones, the usually ominous dramatic music, the stunning performances by Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman...Everything is there for a top series.

And...not to mention the unprecedented way in which police forces are razed to the ground: easygoing...incompetent...ridiculous. Like a red thread through the series and often bringing a touch of humor.

Shocking that it all really happened.

Started way too late, very good series, but 8/10 from Netflix.
