Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt plot

Kimmy Schmidt has just been rescued from an Indiana cult where she and three other women were held for 15 years. Determined not to be seen as a victim, Kimmy starts her life over with a positive attitude. She moves to New York City and, with the help of roommate Titus Andromedon, begins an "adult" life.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt season 1

An infectious mix of satire and feel-good comedy. Kimmy Schmidt is a fun character as the naive ex-cult member who cheerfully tries to shape her new life in the modern jungle. Ellie Kemper knows how to portray her as an expressive young woman whose every emotion is reflected on her face. Tituss Burgess is as witty as the naughty drama queen who mainly cares about herself and her own needs. It's nice how it playfully plays with the well-worn clichés of the sitcom and then gives it its own twist. So expect many references to other major series and films that took place in New York.

The main plus is that it is full of idiotic supporting roles played by (ex-) members of Saturday Night Live. Each episode is set up like a skit in which Kimmy finds new idiotic men in her path who go overboard in their narcissistic craziness. It is also aesthetically pleasing with the many cheerful colors and exaggeratedly beautiful locations. In Kimmy's universe, even a shitty apartment becomes a calling card for life in multicultural New York.

I do think that the series can be bloody irritating for some viewers. It's certainly not middle of the road with something for everyone, but the comedy is consistently hyperactively noisy and it's full of quasi-hip references to popular phenomena. In that sense, you know from the very first episode whether the style and atmosphere are right up your alley. Especially worth it for people who crave a healthy dose of sugar-sweet cheerfulness from thirteen episodes of joint comedic talent from sharp writers and rock-solid comedic actors.
