Spent plot

Despite her humble beginnings, Mia has grown accustomed to the finer things in life. Nice clothes, nice friends and a well-filled bank account. Unfortunately, Mia's jet-set career has come to a screeching halt. She is essentially bankrupt, is approaching 40 and has trouble finding a place to sleep. Mia has fled, especially from herself. She also realizes that her friends and family bring their own problems with them. She does not really get the festive welcome she had hoped for. Eventually, she will have to accept her new reality, although this will be a trial and error process for Mia herself and everyone around her.

Like I May Destroy You and Fleabag, Spent is about a protagonist in crisis. In this case, a financial and an existential crisis. Cabaret artist Michelle de Swarte has incorporated her experiences as a former model into the six-part Spent, in which she also plays the lead role. In New York, model Mia (de Swarte) discovers that she has large debts due to her luxurious life. She decides to flee to London, where she grew up. She soon runs into exes, father figures and Jeffrey Epsteins in her already chaotic life. Mia's rather unsympathetic character ensures that you actually don't care about the misery she ends up in. Spent is therefore a distant dramedy that refuses to become funny or dramatic.
