In the past, the bad guys in a spy thriller were usually Nazis or Communists, but after September 11, this old genre was given a new lease of life. The Islamists of Al-Qaida act as the enemy here. However, it is not black and white, so not just the good Americans against the bad Easterners. There is paranoia; it is rarely clear who you can or cannot trust. It is loosely based on the Israeli series Hatufim (2010), but much better elaborated.
The structure and assembly ensure a tight tension. It switches seamlessly between the events of the present, surveillance footage in black and white, TV coverage and flashbacks. The scenes in the Middle East were shot in Israel. The search for Abu Nazir follows the chain principle: each episode they move one link closer to him.
The main characters have contradictory traits. Carrie is extremely driven and skilled, but alternates manic phases with breakdowns. Brody is with the ethical dilemma between two ideologies. Jessica plays the American hero's wife in public, but perhaps would have preferred not to see him return. Dana is the rebellious teenage daughter, but the only one who gets through to Brody. Saul wants to obey the CIA bosses, but at the same time protect the impulsive Carrie.
Claire Danes plays the part of her life. Damian Lewis never guessed he was British. The best supporting roles are for Mandy Patinkin, Morena Baccarin, Morgan Saylor and - only in this first season - Marin Ireland. The international conflicts at the beginning of this century have provided inspiration.
