For the first time, the New Horizons IFF was launched in 2001. It was an event aimed at presenting independent artistic cinema – at that time, represented in Poland rather poorly – which sought for new ways of expression and breaking the frontiers set by conventional filmmakers.

This is a festival of cinema visionaries, adamant artists, brave enough to follow their own path against the trends and to talk about the most important matters, using their own, unique language. From hundreds of films screened every year at international festivals, as well as these sent for selection, we have chosen the ones that – due to their unusual form and the power of expression – defend themselves from being forgotten. These films evoke extreme reactions, bring up emotions, start vigorous discussions, and provoke raptures and protests. Yet, it is this kind of works that set the trends of the international cinema.

Each year, the festival hosts several dozens of film directors from all over the world – from debutants to undisputed film masters. We already had the honor of hosting: Abdellatif Kechiche, Agnès Varda, Nanni Moretti, Terry Gilliam, Peter Greenaway, Béla Tarr, Bruno Dumont, Carlos Reygadas, Aleksander Sokurow, Abel Ferrara, Kim Ki-duk, Tsai Ming-liang, Naomi Kawase, Carlos Saura, Claire Denis, Dušan Makavejev, Asghar Farhadi, Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, Andrei Konchalovsky, Leos Carax, Stephen and Timothy Quay, Gaspar Noé, Michel Franco, Nadav Lapid, Sandra Wollner, Radu Jude, Mark Jenkin, Lisandro Alonso as well as Rose Glass, Miguel Gomes, Lorcan Finnegan, Ellen Kuras and Bertrand Bonello.

In het kort is dit een filmfestival die zich nog echt ouderwets focust op de jaaroogst en regisseurs in focus heeft die je snel verwacht op andere filmfestivals. Denk aan Sharunas Bartas, Nagisa Ôshima, Fred Kelemen, Joanna Hogg, Chantal Akerman, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Albert Serra, Shûji Terayama, Nicolas Roeg, João César Monteiro, et cetera. Het is vooral een publieksfilmfestival met een betaalbare accreditatie voor publiek en industrie. Ze bestaan dit jaar precies vijfentwintig jaar.

Al diverse malen bezocht en vorig jaar voor het eerste de hele periode gebleven. Uitermate fijn festival door zijn kwalitatief hoogstaande selectie en compacte locaties. De meeste voorstellingen zijn in het KNH, een voormalig multiplex dat - in de periode voorafgaand aan het jaar dat Wroclaw Europese culturele hoofdstad was - werd omgebouwd tot cultiplex met 9 prettige en goed geequipeerde zalen. Op een kwartiertje lopen zit de tweede locatie met nog een drie zalen. Elk moment van de dag dus twaalf opties om uit te kiezen en daar zit altijd wel iets van je gading bij.

Daarbij is Wroclaw - ooit was het gebied Duits en heette het Breslau - een leuke (studenten-)stad met een behoorlijk jonge bevolking, een mooi oud centrum en gunstig geprijsde eet- en drinkgelegenheden. En pas op dat je niet struikelt over de vele kabouters die je in het straatbeeld tegenkomt.

Creatures of the Night:

Creatures of the Night is a story of dance revolutions and hedonistic meetings, of club communities and solitary escapades. It is a chronicle of sleepless nights—of social adventurers and lonely wolves who reshaped the British cultural landscape over the past half-century. But nightlife has long been more than entertainment. It has become a laboratory of experimentation, its influence rippling into art, fashion, lifestyle, urban design, and human relationships,” writes Ewa Szabłowska, the section’s curator and artistic director of the festival.

Inmiddels zijn er drie nieuwe programma's bekendgemaakt waaronder een retrospectief. Ik begin er langzaamaan echt zin in te hebben.

Films that remain?

How do you distill the essence of such a long and rich history? Or better yet—is it even possible? Over the past 25 years, we've presented thousands of films: wildly diverse, but each a vital brick in building New Horizons. To mark the festival’s 25th edition, we're going back to the roots. We're bringing back to the big screen the titles that—once in Sanok or Cieszyn—caused the biggest stir, sparked heated discussions, and, at times, met with misunderstanding or outright rejection. Risky? Perhaps. But this is how New Horizons was forged. We want to see what impact these films have on today's audiences; how they resonate with contemporary sensibilities.

Lee Chang-dong Retrospective:

The retrospective will also showcase two films by Park Kwang-su—To the Starry Island (Geu seome gago shibda, 1993) and A Single Spark (Jeon tae-il, 1995)—a key figure in the Korean New Wave and a mentor to Lee Chang-dong, with whom Lee collaborated as a screenwriter. The program will also include A Brand New Life (Yeohaengja), directed by Ounie Lecomte and Lee Jong-eon, and produced by Lee Chang-dong, as well as the aforementioned documentary Lee Chang-dong: The Art of Irony by Alain Mazars.

Op basis van 36 langspelers en 1 short maakte ik de volgende lijst.

01. Blue Sun Palace (Constance Tsang)

Hoogst indrukwekkend speelfilmdebuut. Het doet pijn om te weten dat de Nederlandse distributeur niets met deze film gaat doen.

02. Measures for a Funeral (Sofia Bohdanowicz)

De stream-of-consciousness montage is overweldigend. Sofia Bohdanowicz verdient het om gezien en gehoord te worden. Op dit moment één van de grootste talenten uit Canada.

03. La Tour de Glace (Lucile Hadzihalilovic)

Helaas heb ik Hadzihalilovic vorige film niet kunnen zien omdat die nauwelijks tot niet vertoond werd in de Benelux, maar gelukkig is ze met haar vierde langspeler weer helemaal terug. Ze maakt van de sneeuwkoningin een donker, sfeerrijk sprookje waarbij de film zich compleet in de schemering van de nacht afspeelt.

04. El Mensaje (Iván Fund)

Een terloopse en tedere Argentijnse coming-of-age film, waarbij een meisje centraal staat met een bovennatuurlijke gave. Fraai gebruik van melancholische muziek en sfeervolle zwart-wit beelden.

05. Romería (Carla Simón)

Sluitstuk van haar autobiografische trilogie waarin ze wroet in de levens van haar ouders. Simón heeft een goed oog voor beginnende acteurs met karakterkoppen en familiescènes waarbij er een bepaalde spanning en dynamiek gevangen moet worden.

06. Miroirs No. 3 (Christian Petzold)

Een aangrijpend en tegelijkertijd speels drama rondom rouwverwerking zoals alleen Petzold dat kan regisseren. Wat mij betreft gaan we met zijn allen meer fietsen in films.

De moeite waard: Un Poeta (Simón Mesa Soto) en The Love That Remains (Hlynur Palmason).

Het was voor mij de eerste keer dat ik Polen en het New Horizons Filmfestival bezocht. Uiteindelijk viel het programma tegen, hetgeen deels kwam omdat ik niet alles kon zien doordat alles snel was uitverkocht. Iedere ochtend om half negen ging de kaartverkoop open en sommige films waren binnen een aantal secondes al uitverkocht. Ik overdrijf hier niet. Uiteindelijk heb ik Bi Gan, Oliver Laxe, Kleber Mendonça Filho en de debuutfilms van Tato Kotetshvili en Victoria Franco moeten missen.

Bij een aantal zalen van de Kino Nowe Horyzonty waren de stoelen zo hard dat je naderhand rugpijn had van het 'surfplankje' waarop je zat. Je kreeg daar niet echt een fatsoenlijke zit- en kijkhouding. Er mag overigens niet gegeten worden in de zalen en het publiek is heel rustig en hoor je zelden tot nooit praten.

Veel Polen drinken bij de avondslots van 22 uur massaal blikken bier. Vlak voor het moment dat de film begint doen ze achter elkaar hun blikken bier open. Dat is wel echt hilarisch om te horen.

Helaas was voor elke voorstelling een tien minuten durend reclameblok waarin sponsors bedankt werden, maar ook reclame werd gemaakt voor een plaatselijke bank, bier, kabouters, gokmachines, et cetera. Als je tientallen films gaat zien begint dat na een aantal keer enorm te storen.

Er ging best wel wat mis tijdens de vertoningen van de films. Eén film viel uit in het slotakkoord, bij een andere film moesten we halverwege de zaal uit omdat het brandalarm afging, bij weer een andere voorstelling vlogen na de eerste akte de felle bouwlampen aan, et cetera. Overigens zijn honden blijkbaar toegestaan tijdens de voorstellingen. Het was een bizarre ervaring toen een hond in de zaal begon te blaffen tegen de hond op het scherm.

Desalniettemin heb ik ontzettend genoten van de stad, de vriendelijke mensen en de vele parken van Wrocław.
