This is more R.E.M than IDLES. The b-side, meanwhile, is unreleased and written by guitarist Conor Curley. A future collectible no doubt.

Review: The full length of Tracy Chapman's self-titled debut (the 30th Anniversary Edition came out in 2018 and is now reissued again) remains as timeless as its speedometric hit, 'Fast Car'. Encapsulating Chapman's blitzed blend of folk, rock, and social commentary, this one came when the singer and instrumentalist was only just beginning to find her voice. Chapman was relatively unknown when she recorded the album, and much of her early life was marked by a sense of personal introspection: she moved to San Francisco to attend college at Tufts University, where she studied anthropology and African studies. It was during her time at Tufts that she began performing in coffeehouses, eventually leading to her discovery by producer David Kershenbaum. It would prove a challenge for Chapman to square her deeply personal, emancipatory and justice-conscious approach to music with the largely rather carnivorous music industry, but 'Talkin' 'bout a Revolution', 'Let It Rain' and 'Behind The Wall' all further highlight her political awareness and desire for change, essentially clustering around the theme of escaping into a better life.

The most famous song here is 'Dry The Rain' because it's played in the John Cushak-starring comedy about a record shop owner, High Fidelity. The reissue comes as the band have reunited for the first time since they split in 2004. They evidently have an impressive phone book having drawn in some all-time greats to do justice to the goth rock godfathers, The Cure. Review: Reissued in 2025, Flight Of The Conchords' debut 2008 LP compiled and studio-ized the very best of the New Zealand comedy duo's musical numbers, which had hitherto only appeared on TV and in concert. Billed as a final foil to "all the inexpert fan-made audio transfers which have bloated hard drives the world over" in the words of Sub Pop, Bret McKenzie and Jermaine Clements' parodic folk efforts here are commendable. Trademark acoustic guitars and diverse instrumentation underlie this jocose dose, while the sheerly most relevant of all contemporary foibles and current affairs - the Pet Shop Boys, censorship, Marvin Gaye, sexism, Shabba Ranks, and backhanded compliments - is handled with smooth irreverence.

Review: Who can argue with them for wanting to repress this beauty? It's quite simply one of the best pop albums of all time. Tracy Chapman's voice is inimitable and she is, frankly, a genius. The timeless yet nostalgic 'Fast Car' is the unmistakable standout here - be teleported back to late-80s Britain (when it was a ubiquitous presence in public spaces) but know that if an emerging artist wrote that today it would still be a number one. Strictly speaking this is a 37th anniversary reissue - but who's counting? The label, with Chapman herself involved, have gone to meticulous steps to ensure it's an audiophile delight: Heavyweight vinyl and sourced from the analog master. The trusty Bernie Grundman, who is one of the best mastering engineers in the world, was the honoured hire in bringing this work of art back to life.

Review: Author and musician Julian Cope, formerly of Teardrop Explodes, is a leftfield national treasure. His books contain some of the funniest and most imaginative stories ever printed and as a musician he is the essence of rock n' roll. This latest album - the follow-up to 2023's excellent Robin Hood - is Cope at his most melodic. It contains nods to the likes of spook rocker Joe Meek, Velvet Underground and Krautrock, with a smorgasbord of guitar tones, mellotron and loose Moe Tucker-esque drumming. Cope's lyrics, with plenty of humour and off-kilter references, are a joy to dive into as they're cloaked in some of the best music he's ever composed.

Now repressed on its 30th Anniversary, we once again bask in Layne Staley's stimulant voice, weaving unmistakable soul-searcher lyrics on 'River Of Deceit' and 'I Don't Know Anything'; reflecting addiction, despair, redemption. Review: The influential German band Xmal Deutschland are overhead rafters in the great mead hall of goth. Their propulsive successes throughout the 1980s meant the genre likely couldn't've done without them. A large band come music collective, made up of at least eight members at any given time, Xmal's formation in Hamburg and would presell audiences on a stalwart performance rep, thanks to an early tour and gig residency in support of dream pop preeminents Cocteau Twins. Rallied to fame by their goth classics 'Incubus Succubus' and 'Qual', this 2xCD review conjoins two of the earliest and most pivotal albums on which both of said singles were housed - Fetisch and Tocsin - along with tracks from other key releases, such as Incubus Succubus II. Helping blacken an otherwise dreamy time, these LPs highlight the gloomier soils of a superficially bright 1980s soundfield, which otherwise roseated by shoegaze. Photography by Kevin Cummins, Paul Slattery, Sheila Rock and more all capture the spirit.

It expands on 2024's taster EP 'SABLE' in the form of an 11-track sonic parable: waxing introspective on difficult themes such as memory and identity, 'THINGS BEHIND THINGS BEHIND THINGS' and 'S P E Y S I D E' indulge typographic play and fragmental lyrics, the latter especially paradigm-shifting in lyrical perspective. 'Awards Season', also, deals in the problematics of recognition, peeking behind and thus part-dissolving the veil of success in public life. With signature passion yet quarrelsomeness, Justin Vernon has crafted yet another glistening, glitching folk odyssey for us to enjoy.

Review: 'Camden lurch' icons Swervedriver famously got their break after being signed by Alan McGee to Creation Records and later in the US by A&M who gave Creation a quarter of a million for the privilege. By the late 90s, they were dropped by A&M, so they self-released their 1998 album 99th Dream. The sessions for said album spawned more material than made the cut and so they filtered the outtakes and demos to a collection named Doremi Faso Latido. And with shoegaze having more influence on new bands now than it's done in decades, interest in Swervedriver as legends of the genre - alongside their friends Ride - means there's pan-generational interest in having this vital and rare collection on vinyl. It has only been available on CD so far. Of the tracks on here, 'Canvey Island Baby' is a corker, with the wistful spoken word vocal recalling Comet Gain. While 'Sciflyer97', though clearly a rough demo, is a masterclass in effect pedal manipulation and hammers home just how great it is to have Swervedriver back out gigging again.

Review: The original album artwork, designed by Tony Hung, features an ice cream in neon lights against a black background. For this special edition, Hung has reimagined the design, adding gold foil and embossed details. It's a beautiful reworking that goes well with the gold disc and shows a deeper connection to the music. The audio has been spruced up using a technique that is the holy grail of vinyl cutting. And in terms of the music, you might consider the tracks more deep cuts as they don't tend to decorate their live sets. But that ought to change as there's moments of pure genius. To name a couple: 'Lonesome Street' could have made any of Bowie's albums. And 'There Are Too Many of Us' sees Albarn dabble in Roger Waters-esque observations beautifully. Time has been very kind to The Magic Whip as it's aging really well.

Review: In the music business the thinking often goes that first week sales are an indicator of a release's popularity and after that it's downhill from there. Occasionally, however, bands or solo artists write tunes with a pan-generational power to connect. Hugely popular Coventry band The Enemy have done that with the title track to this raucous indie guitar cracker of a debut album - originally released in 2007, and going straight to number one in the UK. 'We'll Live And Die In These Towns' has been adopted by the Coventry City football club as their unofficial anthem and is regularly sung with fervor by fans before matches. There's more emotion emanating from the stands when it's sung than the national anthem. It's a song of the people - as important as Billy Bragg's 'A New England'. This track sits as a high point in a tracklist that's no slouch on rabble-rousing hits throughout and it's a reminder of why The Enemy are a national treasure to so many.

Review: Of all the terms here, the one used at the time was most frequently new rave and it would be an unthinkable scene without the Klaxons, so it's great to see them make the tracklist, alongside top tier like-minded acts. Bloc Party are one of the best indie bands to remix ever and the version of their best song 'Banquet' is a banger. Elsewhere, LCD Soundsystem's most catchy number 'Tribulations' is a dead cert in terms of getting people off their seats. One of the hyped bands of the era who deserve recognition are We Have Band and it's a shrewd move to include them. Electroclash heroes Fischerspooner had signed to Minsitry of Sound for L2 million around the time 'Emerge' came out and were easily one of the hottest dance acts around, and make for another cracking addition to this seriously high quality retrospective.

Review: This is the first Suede release with a co-writing credit for guitarist Richard Oakes, who succeeded Bernard Butler. Oakes is on the b-side 'Together', while the a-side - the best track on Suede's iconic second album Dog Man Star - is credited to the legendary plankspanker Butler. 'New Generation' is a beautiful blend of Manic Street Preachers-esque rock with Bowie and T-Rex-esque glam - it's a perfect pop song. Singer Brett Anderson is at his hooky and melodic best here. Meanwhile, 'Together' takes a more Stone Roses-y blues rock direction and it's tougher with more bile, but still majestic thanks to the lush wall of sound that Suede do so well, whilst retaining their hard rock DNA.
