Review: Originally released in 2008, Phantom On The Horizon is the grandiose, progressive rock worshipping high concept EP from Washington based math-rock indebted post-hardcore heroes The Fall Of Troy. Initially abandoned following the leak of early versions in 2004 on what has since been dubbed The Ghostship Demos EP, the band would finally get over this setback and bang out the entire project in secret over October of 2008 before dropping it the very next month. Renowned for its epic, lengthy pieces segmented into chapters like all good prog concept records, the work stands as solely unique from the majority of the trio's remaining output, bridged in the gap year between 2007's instantaneous Manipulator and the more melodic alt rock of 2009's In The Unlikely Event. Utilising an array of guest musicians adding elements of keyboards, violin, cello and glockenspiel for that extra proggy flair, while featuring guest vocal appearances from the likes of Fear Before's Dave Marion as well as both Ryann Donnelly and Jonah Bergman of Schoolyard Heroes, the mini-epic 5 tracks clock in at a 37-minute runtime detailing story of a Spanish galleon meeting with a ghost ship from another dimension. A true outlier gem conjuring a Venn Diagram intersection between early noughties sassy post-hardcore and timeless 70s indebted prog absurdity.

Review: Fresh from delivering killer dancefloor jazz covers of classics cuts by Galaxy 2 Galaxy and Avicii (really), Japanese trio Polyplus deliver a fine sequel to last year's Good Luck Sound Tracks EP. They go for the dancefloor jugular from the off, wrapping snaking sax solos, fuzzy guitar licks and elongated solos around a breathlessly rapid punk-funk groove on 'Massive', before fusing Brit-Funk and sweat-soaked jazz-rock on 'Speedy Gold'. This hybrid jazz-funk/rock sound continues on 'Ranki 2025' (whose heavy beats and memorable piano riffs nods to classic house). Elsewhere, 'Ocean Breeze' re-frames wide-eyed city-pop as jaunty jazz-funk and 'Natural Born' is a drum solo-sporting slab of jazz-rock/jazz-fusion insanity straight from the top drawer.

What really stands out on this record, a reissue of a 1983 LP, is the tension between chaos and control. You get the sense that the artist is both recklessly in command and completely at the mercy of the music. There's a thrilling danger to how the sound pulses forward, stumbling but never quite falling over. Tracks drift between intense, unsettling moments and spacey, reflective passages like a psyche caught in a constant tug-of-war. But that's the beauty of it: it's impossible to pin down, never comfortable but always compelling.

Review: An album known for its extraordinary musical interpretation of some of Poe's most iconic works, this 1976 release still fascinates listeners today. With an intricate fusion of progressive rock, orchestral arrangements and innovative studio techniques, the album takes the listener in a dark, cinematic journey through Poe's literary universe. Parsons' production expertise is evident throughout, weaving together synthesisers, guitars, glockenspiel and dramatic orchestration, while eerie sound effects and narration enhance the album's haunting atmosphere. This reissue sound terrific aided by each side being pressed at 45rpm for extra fidelity. The instrumental opener, 'A Dream Within a Dream', sets an ominous mood, which features Orson Welles' narration. 'The Raven' employs an EMI vocoder and a boys' choir, crafting an eerie, chamber-like sound. Arthur Brown's impassioned vocals on 'The Tell-Tale Heart' heighten the track's intensity, mirroring the protagonist's growing madness. 'The Cask of Amontillado' and 'The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether' showcase the album's dynamic range, moving between grand orchestration and progressive rock energy. The 20-minute instrumental epic 'The Fall of the House of Usher' is a masterclass in atmosphere-building, from the baroque horror of its 'Prelude' to the unsettling climax in 'Fall'. The closing ballad, 'To One in Paradise', softens the album's brooding intensity with melancholic beauty. A stunning fusion of literature and music, it is one of the most inventive and evocative progressive rock albums ever recorded.

Review: Talk about universe building - Coheeed & Cambria have written their own science fiction odyssey, realised it visually, and then used this as inspiration for their music. Creative self-indulgence or self-dependence, either way it's made for a compelling back catalogue of prog-leaning post-hardcore and emo-infused heavy rock bordering on metal. The Father of Make Believe is the latest episode this epic journey. And it's fully fledged Coheed & Cambria - so instantly gratifying there's a case for this as rock-pop, the slow jam 'Corner of My Confidence' perhaps taking that idea to the furthest point, although even the main stage juggernauts like 'Someone Who Can' seem to be equal parts geek-out six string solo and polished to perfection. In other hands, this might feel plastic, but the skill with which they pull their sound off is nothing but authentic.
