IGN's 2019 Movie, TV, Comic Book, and Anime of the Year Awards

2019 was a great year for movies, TV, comic books, and anime, from Avengers Endgaming to Watchmen returning to amazing runs on the page for characters like the Dark Knight and Thor. So now, as we prepare to close out the year, it's time to once again pick our favorites -- the truly great films and shows and comics that stood head and shoulders above the rest.

First up today we present our nominations in a wide variety of categories. And then in the coming weeks we will announce our winners. What will the best movie, TV series, comic book, and anime be of 2019? Stay tuned...

And one note: Some films and shows haven't been shown to the press yet at the time of publication (we're looking at you, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker!), so we reserve the right to add any such title to our nominees list once we've seen it.

With the year coming to a close and awards season in full steam, it's time to celebrate the films that have wowed us most in 2019. From comic book movies, both epic and intimate, to action extravaganzas, compelling dramas, uproarious comedies and more, we found the following films and artists to be this year's biggest standouts. Here then are our movie of the year awards nominees for 2019...

Best TV Show Award Categories for 2019

They say it’s a new Golden Age for TV, and you know what? It’s true. In fact, the biggest problem we have these days is finding the time to actually watch everything that’s worth checking out. And 2019 continued the trend of TV’s ascension in the pop-culture pantheon, with streaming services and cable networks jockeying for position and the viewer reaping the benefits with so many terrific shows. HBO’s Watchmen has proven to be a masterwork right out of the gate, while Netflix is constantly dropping new programming, and often really hitting the mark with the likes of the head-trippy Russian Doll or the consistently great The Crown. Star Wars has a TV show now too! And Amazon is no slouch either with the likes of The Boys. And the best part is, all of these shows will be getting new seasons before you know it…

Best Comic Book Award Categories for 2019

This was a momentous year in comics as epic runs on Batman and Thor came to an end, enthralling sagas continued in The Immortal Hulk and DIE, and new voices were added to the mix with The Magnificent Ms. Marvel and Sabrina the Teenage Witch. It was an especially notable year for bold projects like Spider-Man: Life Story and DCeased that caught us off guard with emotionally powerful stories. One need only look at the stellar artwork published in 2019 to see that we are being spoiled with some of the finest talents to ever grace the medium, which made deciding on this year's nominations quite the daunting task. But having too many outstanding comics to choose from is a problem we're happy to have.

Best Anime Award Categories for 2019

Each year we see long-awaited series return, are surprised by cool new anime, and more than ever, are able to see new anime movies in theaters. 2019 was especially good to returning anime series and movies; we finally learned what's in Eren's basement and Broly's backstory got revamped. IGN's anime awards are a celebration of those moments and other storytelling and animation accomplishments.
