The inventive premise sets the scene at the fictional biotechnology firm Lumon Industries, where workers’ brains are severed—they live one life inside the office and another outside. After they are severed, they effectively become two completely different people.
This season we’ve seen the office innies and their outies beginning to interact as the innies strive to find answers about the mysterious Lumon Industries, where they work. The 75-minute season finale lands today, and most reviewers already agree that it’s one of the best episodes of the gripping series so far. You have two options—you could go outie and unplug from your screen, or you could stay innie and get lost in a brand-new mind-bending sci-fi thriller.

Another Apple TV+ offering, Silo is a must-watch for sci-fi fans. Based on the novels by Hugh Howsey, this show sets the scene in an imagined future in which humans have moved underground into giant silos that burrow deep into the earth after the surface of the planet has (allegedly) become uninhabitable. The social order in one silo is rocked when people begin questioning the truth about the world outside—is it really as deadly as it seems? If you’re sensing a similarity to the segregation of the innie and outie worlds, here, you aren’t wrong.

Dark
This German-language Netflix series is famously complex and filled with mind-bending twists. After a young boy goes missing from a small town, another teen boy finds a passageway to the past. Soon enough, multiple timelines from the town begin to overlap and intersect. Eventually it becomes clear that every timeline was always destined to be interlinked with the others. There is a lot of time traveling and shock-horror moments of realization in this one—we recommend coming armed with a notepad and pen to keep track of where (and when) all of the characters are.

Devs
This sci-fi thriller by Alex Garland follows a young computer engineer who begins to suspect her company of having something to do with her partner’s disappearance. Someone working at a futuristic company who has things to hide? Sounds familiar…

This 2004 sci-fi series, set in a distant future, is old-school sci-fi. Humans are living in a far-off star system. The Battlestar Galactica, an ancient starship that had been decommissioned, is the only ship to survive the attack. The group sets off in search of the legendary final colony of humans. Their destination? Earth.

Upload
Upload is a 2020 show that sets the scene just 13 years in the future. It’s 2033, and humans are now able to “upload” themselves to a virtual world when they die. After one young man dies, he is uploaded to Lakeview, a virtual world that prizes “timeless Americana.” Unlike many sci-fi shows on this list, Upload is purely comedic. Sure, there are a few twists and mysteries along the way, but you don't need to think too deeply for this one.

Maniac
This show, like Severance, also features a mind-bending futuristic trial on the human mind that leads to some wild results. Emma Stone plays a young woman who agrees to take part in a pharmaceutical drug trial in which participants live in isolation and take a series of pills and find themselves living in alternate realities.

Counterpart
This J.K. Simmons show is yet another workplace sci-fi thriller. Howard (Simmons) is an unexceptional office worker who has been doing his job (not that he fully understands what he’s actually doing) for 30 years. However, when he discovers that his company is actually a portal to an alternate reality that contains another Howard, things quickly take a seriously Severance-like turn.
