2025 Separate Segregated Funds Seminar

Commissioners and staff from the Federal Election Commission (FEC) will host a full day, in-person-only training event for separate segregated funds (SSFs) at its Washington, DC headquarters. During the seminar, attendees will learn the federal campaign finance regulations relevant to political action committees (PACs) set up and administered by corporations, labor organizations, membership organizations and trade associations. Topics include fundraising, restricted class, solicitations, reporting, communications and recent developments in campaign finance law. Workshops are designed for those seeking an introduction to the basic provisions of the law as well as for those more experienced in federal campaign finance rules.

Registration information

Those who are newer to federal campaign finance, or could benefit from a refresher, should plan to attend the Basics workshop, while those with more experience may choose to start the seminar with SSF Operations Part 1 at 11:00 a.m.

Attendance is limited to 50 people, and registration is accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Registrants will receive an emailed receipt from Pay.gov, and a follow up email with more information will be sent the week before the seminar.

Intended audience

  • Treasurers and staff responsible for compliance with federal campaign finance laws for:
    • Corporate PACs
    • Labor Organization PACs
    • Trade Association PACs
    • Membership Organization PACs
  • Attorneys, accountants and consultants for any of these organizations
  • Anyone who wants to gain in-depth knowledge of federal campaign finance law as it applies to these organizations
  • Anyone who wants to learn about recent updates pertaining to campaign finance regulations, advisory opinions, litigation and enforcement

Choosing which workshops to attend

Assess your experience with federal campaign finance law. Beginners should register for the full day, which includes a Basics for Beginners session at 9:15 a.m. More experienced participants may choose to start the day with the first Separate Segregated Fund Operations workshop at 11:00 a.m.

In-person attendance

After registration, attendees will receive a personalized email with information on what to expect next and instructions for entering FEC headquarters. The FEC is located at 1050 First Street NE, in Washington, DC. It is near both the Union Station and NoMa-Gallaudet University stations on Metro's Red Line. Street parking in the area can be difficult, but there are some public lots in the area. The day of the seminar, attendees will be escorted from the building lobby to a security screening, and then on to the Commission Hearing Room for the seminar.

Lunch and other refreshments

Coffee, juice and baked goods will be available during our mid-morning break, but lunch will not be provided. Attendees have several dining options. A list of carry-out and dine-in restaurants in the area will be provided. Alternatively, attendees may bring their lunch, store it in a designated refrigerator, and eat in an agency break room.

To register, visit the FEC Training Payment page on Pay.gov (the government’s secure portal for online payments). Choose your attendance option:

  • Option 1: All Workshops - $90
  • Option 2: Operations & Recent Developments Only - $80

After registration, you will receive an automated confirmation email from Pay.gov and a follow-up email from the FEC's Information Division.

I'm with another type of committee, can I attend to this conference?

You may attend, but the content of this conference is not tailored to your type of organization. A Seminar for Candidates and Political Party Committees will be held on Wednesday, October 22. For information on other outreach opportunities that might better suit your organization's needs, please visit the FEC's Trainings webpage.

CLE credits (or continuing education credits)

The FEC will provide all attendees a letter certifying participation in the seminar, including an agenda and staff bios, which attendees can use to apply independently for CLE or other credits. The FEC has not applied in any state to be an official CLE sponsor. However, past attendees have applied on their own and received continuing education credits for their attendance at FEC training events. Feel free to email conferences@fec.gov if need assistance with CLE credit.
