The event brought together policymakers, experts, and stakeholders to discuss the implications for labour markets, social policies, and policies for families and children. The Committee also looked into possible policy responses, EU recommendations, and held a debate with the participation of the LIBE Committee.

On Thursday, 25 September 2025, from 11:00 to 12:30, the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) hosted a Public Hearing on the “Implementation of Financial Sanctions: Making Better use of our Economic and Financial Instruments/ Frozen Russian assets under the sanctions package”.

The purpose of the hearing was to shed light on the state of play of the restrictive measures concerning the financial sector, in particular those imposed on Russia, to evaluate their effectiveness and enforcement as well as to analyse side-effects and evasion strategies and discuss options to enhance the toolkit.

While the scope of this hearing was limited to addressing restrictive measures concerning the financial sector, it also allowed for a discussion on the implementation of Council Decision (CFSP) 2024/1470, which introduced a financial contribution due by Central Securities Depositories' holding reserves and assets of the Central Bank of Russia, which are immobilised as a consequence of EU's restrictive measures.

The invited speakers were:

Mr John Berrigan, Director-General for Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Markets Union (DG FISMA) of the European Commission; and
Mr Paulis Iļjenkovs, Deputy Head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) of Latvia.

Andra evenemang - ITRE mission to Ontario, Canada, 16-18.09.2025 - 16-09-2025 - Industrifrågor, forskning och energi

The ITRE mission to Ontario, Canada, primarily focused on energy policy and research. It provided Members with first hand insights into Canada’s clean energy transition, the deployment of Small Modular Reactors (SMR), and opportunities for research and industrial cooperation between the EU and Canada. Discussions also covered innovation in nuclear technology, education and training, and the role of hydropower in ensuring grid stability.

A delegation of six Members, led by MEP Dan Nica, first met with a variety of stakeholders, such as the EU Delegation in Canada and the EU Chamber of Commerce (EUCCAN) to discuss EU-Canada relations in the fields of energy, research and innovation. They then met with representatives of the Ontario Government, the Ontario Power Generation (OPG), the Organisation of Canadian Nuclear Industries (OCNI) and its industry representatives to understand Ontario's energy strategy, nuclear power and their first SMR project, currently under construction.
The following days included site visits to Darlington Nuclear and DeCew Falls Generating Station, as well as exchanges at Ontario Tech University and McMaster University, highlighting Ontario's nuclear and hydropower, research and training in advanced energy technologies. This mission turned out to be highly relevant to ITRE's ongoing and upcoming work in these key areas.

The landscape of scientific research is shaped by global digital infrastructures that support critical databases in areas such as health, medicine, climate, and the social sciences. They are governed predominantly outside Europe; thus, European stakeholders and researchers remain significantly dependent on freely available non-European platforms for access to essential information. While Europe has made notable investments in infrastructures, questions persist about the resilience, autonomy, and integrity of its scientific data ecosystem. The dominance of external and commercial databases poses strategic vulnerabilities for academic freedom, innovation, and research continuity in Europe. The aim of the round table is to raise awareness about challenges to data sovereignty and resilience in Europe.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, an estimated 400 million people worldwide have been affected by post-COVID-19 condition (PCC), also known as Long Covid. According to the WHO, around 6 in every 100 people infected with COVID-19 develop Long Covid, a condition that typically begins within three months of the initial illness, lasts for at least two months, and is marked by debilitating symptoms ranging from mild to severe, sometimes leading to long-term disability.

In the early stages of the pandemic, limited clinical knowledge and inadequate healthcare services meant that Long Covid was often undiagnosed, dismissed, poorly assessed, or inappropriately treated, often leading to frustration, stigma, and worsening health outcomes. Five years on, the risk of developing PCC has decreased; yet with SARS-CoV-2 still widely circulating, Long Covid remains a significant global public health challenge.

The impact of Long Covid extends far beyond individual health. It affects productivity, reduces workforce participation, and places considerable strain on national healthcare systems. These wide-ranging consequences make it imperative for the EU, its institutions, and Member States to coordinate their efforts - working hand in hand with patient communities - in providing citizens with improved knowledge, treatment, and support. Bridging the gap between scientific progress and patients' everyday realities is essential: advances in diagnostics, treatment, and rehabilitation must lead to tangible improvements in their quality of life.

This workshop builds on the outcomes of a previous EPRS event that examined the then-emerging understanding of Long Covid--its clinical profile, its impact on patients and society, and the urgent actions needed to address gaps in knowledge, raise awareness, and advance treatment development.

By bringing together MEPs, researchers, policymakers, healthcare professionals, communicators, and patient advocates, the workshop seeks to foster a coordinated, multidisciplinary debate on Long Covid. Its goal is to share insights, challenges, and innovations, while informing both citizens and specialized audiences about scientific progress, policy developments, and practical experiences. Ultimately, it aims to contribute developing effective and long-term strategies for addressing Long Covid across Europe.

On 23 September 2025, the FEMM committee held an exchange of views, in association with the Delegation for relations with the Korean Peninsula, on women escapees from North Korea.

Representatives of the United Nations and the European External Action Service focused on the situation of women escapees from North Korea that experience abuse and exploitation in the borderland region of China. Members heard from a North Korean escapee regarding the first-hand experience and situation of escapees, and the real dangers of being returned to North Korea, as well as the political situation and EU and internal policies.

Five members of the European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI) were in Bangladesh from 16 to 18 September 2025. The mission took place at a pivotal moment in Bangladesh’s democratic transition following the July protests of 2024, which led to the fall of Seikh’s Hassina’s administration. Elections are scheduled to take place in February 2026.

The mission also came at a crucial moment for EU-Bangladesh relations amidst the ongoing negotiations for a Partnership and Cooperation Agreement and the dispatching of an exploratory mission to assess the deployment of an EU Election Observation Mission in the upcoming general elections.

The Members met with government officials, representatives of civil society, Bangladeshi youth and international organisations. Additionally, the DROI delegation visited the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox's Bazar at a critical juncture for the international organisations that are operating on the ground, as the recent decision of the US administration to proceed with major cuts in USAID has significantly diminished the ability of these organisations to continue delivering essential resources, including food, and services to the refugees residing in the camps.

The FISC Subcommittee in cooperation with the Legislative Dialogue Unit of the Directorate for Relations with National Parliaments will organise an Inter-parliamentary Committee Meeting (ICM) on digital taxation on Thursday, 16 October, from 09.45 to 12.30 at the European Parliament, in the Jan Antall building, room 4Q1

Following the great success of the EU Tax Symposium last March, indicating a clear willingness to exchange on European tax topics, and in light of ongoing developments at OECD/G20 level, the Subcommittee on Tax Matters (FISC) organises an interparliamentary committee meeting to discuss and exchange experiences on digital taxation at national and international (OECD/G7) level.

This meeting will bring together representatives from the European Parliament, national parliaments, and representatives from national tax administrations and will be divided into two panels. The first one will be dedicated to a discussion on the reasons behind the implementation (or not) of a digital services tax (DST), the choice of the tax base and the rate applied. The second panel will be devoted to difficulties encountered in collecting the tax, the possible fraud and the revenue raised from this tax.

Services accounted for nearly three quarters of the EU’s gross value added and employment in 2024, showing their key economic role. However, the services sector remains the least integrated part of the Single Market due to persistent cross-border barriers that limit innovation, scaling, and business opportunities. Remarkably, 60% of these barriers are the same as 20 years ago. Reducing non-tariff barriers by just 10% could boost EU gross value added by 0.5%.

This public hearing assessed current barriers and explored actions to improve outcomes for consumers and businesses across the EU. It aimed to overcome obstacles in the services sector and unlock the internal market's full potential, considering the Commission's recent Single Market Strategy. This public hearing gathered stakeholders including the Commission, national authorities, consumer groups, and industry for open discussion.

The first panel focused on barriers to intra-EU trade in services, such as regulatory restrictions, national differences, and cross-border obligations limiting providers and consumers. The second panel highlighted the services sector's importance and explored proactive measures to enhance trade, identify priorities, and accelerate progress in reducing fragmentation and unlocking the Single Market's full potential for services.

On 24 September (15.00-17.00) the DROI Subcommittee and the FEMM Committee are organising a public hearing on ‘The EU strategy to promote and to protect human rights of women worldwide (notably in Afghanistan & Iran, with a focus on fighting gender apartheid)’. Representatives of the EU, the United Nations, the International Criminal Court and Amnesty International will participate in the exchange while human rights defenders and journalists will share their personal testimonies.

This public hearing will assess the current global trends, examine the global human rights situation for women, especially in Iran and Afghanistan, and discuss the overall EU strategy to protect women's rights worldwide. It aims to put forward concrete proposals to complement currently implemented strategies in support of persecuted women. Additionally, the hearing aims to assess how international legal mechanisms could recognise gender apartheid in order to bring perpetrators to justice.

This discussion is particularly pertinent in the current geopolitical environment, where a regress of gender equality is becoming globally apparent.

Members of the Iran and Afghanistan Parliamentary Delegations and of DEVE Committee have been also invited. The hearing is public and will be webstreamed.

A delegation of the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET), led by MEP Matjaž Nemec (S&D, SI) traveled to Bosnia and Herzegovina from 16 to 18 September 2025. This was the first official visit of the AFET Committee to the Western Balkans in the 10th legislative term.

The visit aimed to underline the Committee's commitment to Bosnia and Herzegovina's European integration, grounded in unity, sovereignty, territorial integrity. Members discussed Bosnia and Herzegovina's progress, and the further reforms needed to advance in its accession path towards the EU.

A delegation of the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET), led by Chair David McAllister, traveled to Ottawa and Toronto from 16 to 18 September 2025. This was the AFET Committee's first official visit to Canada under the European Parliament's current mandate and after the 2025 Canadian federal elections.

During the trip, Members discussed how to further strengthen the EU's strategic partnership with Canada, reinforce the shared commitment to supporting Ukraine, and jointly address challenges such as the situation in the Middle East, China's growing global influence and geopolitical competition in the Arctic. Insights gathered from the visit will inform the Committee's ongoing work on the Recommendation on enhanced EU-Canada cooperation in the light of the current geopolitical context.

A delegation of the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET), led by Chair David McAllister, traveled to Bern, Switzerland from 11 to 12 September 2025. During the visit, Members discussed notably the new broad package of agreements that aim to consolidate, deepen and expand the bilateral relations between the EU and Switzerland.

Political agreement on this broad package has been reached in December 2024. In Bern, Members had the opportunity to exchange with representatives of the government and parliament on the upcoming ratification processes on both sides.

On Monday, 22 September 2025 in room Spaak 3C50 (16:00-17:30), the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) will hold a public hearing on promoting an EU feminist foreign policy. This hearing brings together Margot Wallström, who launched the world's first feminist foreign policy in 2014 when she was Foreign Minister of Sweden, and Aude Maio-Coliche, the EU Ambassador for Equality, to discuss how an EU feminist foreign policy could take shape and what the EU is currently doing in this field.

A Feminist Foreign Policy is an approach that puts gender equality at the centre of foreign policy and highlights resources, representation and rights. The hearing aims to assess the current level of ambition and implementation of the EU's foreign policy as regards gender equality, and provide inspiration and concrete examples for continued work in this area.

From 15 to 17 September 2025, a delegation composed of Members from the IMCO Committee and led by its Vice-Chair, Ms Kamila Gasiuk-Pihowicz, visited Denmark and Sweden to discuss Single Market issues such as digitalisation, consumer protection, procurement, and internal market implementation. The visit included meetings with key government and business stakeholders, including Ms Caroline Stage, the Danish Minister for Digital Affairs and site visits to key industrial and transport hubs.

The aim of the mission was to assess how EU legislation related to digitalisation and the internal market is implemented at local and national levels; to explore the digital transformation of public administration and procurement, including efforts to increase transparency and facilitate SME participation; to discuss challenges and opportunities faced by Danish and Swedish industries in the EU internal market; to address consumer protection issues and gather information on consumer advocacy efforts in both countries; and to examine the role of key industrial hubs, in driving competitiveness, innovation and sustainability within the internal market. To achieve these objectives, the delegation met with government officials, public procurement authorities, business associations, consumer organisations, and visited industrial and transport facilities, in order to ensure a comprehensive understanding of best practices and challenges in the EU internal market context.

The workshop on Transport Security Challenges in the Baltic Sea Region, in particular GPS jamming, and shadow fleet floating will take place on Wednesday 24 September during the TRAN Committee meeting.

The delegation, led by the First Vice-Chair, Ms Kira Peter-Hansen, will meet with representatives of key institutions, such as the Ministry of Finance, the Tax Department and the Standing Committee on Financial and Budgetary Affairs of the House of Representatives, as well as stakeholders from the private sector, trade unions, experts and civil society.

The discussions will focus on topical international tax issues and challenges, such as the implementation of the OECD's two-pillar tax reform, the implementation of key EU laws in the area of taxation, including on exchange of tax information and anti-tax abuse measures, the simplification of tax systems and improving competitiveness through tax measures, tax incentives, and energy taxation.

From 15 to 17 September 2025, Members of the Committee on Petitions will carry out a fact-finding visit in the Canary Islands (Spain) following a petition on the need for joint action by the European Union on migration. During the three-day visit, they will engage with affected citizens, policymakers, police forces and members of the judiciary to gather as much information possible in order to get to know, first hand, the different challenges arising from the migratory pressure affecting the region and the situation of migrants, and particularly foreign unaccompanied minors in the Canary Islands.
