WLS-Ch. 7 will expand its midday newscast to an hour in early October, the station announced Monday.

Channel 7’s news, which currently airs from 11:30 a.m. to noon, will begin at 11 a.m. The expansion was prompted by ABC’s decision to cancel “Port Charles,” a soap-opera spinoff of “General Hospital,” which runs from 11 to 11:30 a.m. The last episode of “Port Charles” will air Oct. 3; the expanded newscast will begin on Oct. 6.

Channel 7 becomes the third Chicago broadcaster to offer an hour of midday news, joining WGN-Ch. 9 and WFLD-Ch. 32. WMAQ-Ch. 5 and WBBM-Ch. 2 air 30-minute news at 11 a.m.

The expanded WLS newscast will feature the present anchor team of Linda Yu, Sylvia Perez and meteorologist Tracy Butler.
