Alene Bouranova is a Pacific Northwest native and a BU alum (COM’16). After earning a BS in journalism, she spent four years at Boston magazine writing, copyediting, and managing production for all publications. These days, she covers campus happenings, current events, and more for BU Today. Fun fact: she’s still using her Terrier card from 2013. When she’s not writing about campus, she’s trying to lose her Terrier card so BU will give her a new one. She lives in Cambridge with her plants. Profile

  1. Congrats to Michele — encouraged a COM alum is taking the reins on campaign funding. COM has been overlooked for decades for upgrades facilities and is deserving of a building that reflects its reputation.

  2. BU faculty here. I’m sure these are talented, capable, and forward-looking leaders. But what miserable timing from our upper administration, which can’t seem to communicate with us what they’re doing in a time of crisis, keep us guessing as to which jobs and which functions are going to be cut, do not tell us about the future of our graduate programs, and have not increased any of our pay to keep up with inflation. Bad vibes from this administration all around.

    1. Your concerns are completely valid, and I’ve heard similar frustration from other colleagues of mine on staff. That said, I wonder if some of the uncertainty stems more from leadership at the department level rather than the administration itself? I’ve heard varying accounts and it seems everyone is just tackling things a bit differently.

In my experience, our department has been fairly clear about what projects are on pause, what’s moving forward, and the reasoning behind those decisions. Given that this administration is still in its early stages and actively working to establish itself, I’d be cautious about placing all the blame on them just yet.

  3. Congratulations to you both! As an alumnus of BU, I’d love to see more events in Orange County CA vs Los Angeles. I wish you both success.
