Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is a condition in which veins in the legs fail to efficiently return blood to the heart, causing blood to pool in the lower extremities. The condition occurs when one-way valves in veins that normally prevent the backflow of blood to the legs become damaged or weakened.
