The measure pH was devised by the Danish biochemist S.P.L. Sørensen in 1909. The H stands for the hydrogen ion. In Sørensen’s papers, pH is measured using the values from two electrodes, designated p and q. The p in pH thus stands for the hydrogen-ion concentration measured at the electrode p.
