Cinema's always had a fondness for kinkiness

Fifty Shades of Grey may be inescapable right now, but there's nothing new about S&M in film, writes Robbie Collin.

With two relatively mainstream films about sadomasochism appearing on the big screen, perhaps now is the time for us to acknowledge cinema's uncanny but much-ignored resemblance to a sex game.

For almost as long as they've been made and watched, films have been safe spaces in which we can indulge our most outlandish and socially unacceptable fantasies, without consequence, for as long as the lights are out.
