From pledges to practice: Atlassian’s commitments to the EU AI Pact and responsible AI governance
In September 2024, I traveled to Brussels, Belgium to represent Atlassian at the launch of the EU AI Pact, an initiative of the European Commission for companies to voluntarily pledge to uphold key responsible AI practices in preparation for the EU AI Act. We were proud to join over 100 industry leaders from across market sectors as initial signatories of the Pact, demonstrating our commitment to responsible AI and addressing our customers’ compliance needs.
Our engagement in the EU AI Pact is another step in our journey to deliver AI that customers can trust and deploy with confidence. We’ve achieved SOC2 and ISO 27001 compliance for Rovo and, building on these certifications, we recently announced that Data Residency support for Rovo is now generally available. As new regulatory obligations take root, we’ve taken a proactive approach to compliance with the EU AI Act to ensure that we’re a step ahead of our customers’ needs.
One year later, I’m back in Brussels to share our report on our progress on our pledges: From Pledges to Practice: Atlassian’s Commitment to the EU AI Pact. This report outlines Atlassian’s five pledges under the Pact and the key actions, achievements, and lessons learned from implementation. Our pledges emphasize the following five areas of work, which reflect our Responsible Technology Principles and are key to our preparation for the EU AI Act:
(1) adopting an organizational strategy for AI governance that promotes internal use of AI;
(2) addressing high-risk AI use cases in our products and operations;
(3) educating our teams about AI and its impacts;
(4) providing transparency for deployers utilizing Atlassian AI; and
(5) designing our AI systems to ensure that end-users recognize AI in their interactions.
By participating in the Pact, we were prompted to look closely at our ongoing AI governance programs and assess our achievements as well as lessons learned. We hope that our new report will provide deeper insight for our customers and other stakeholders about our responsible AI governance work.
Accountability is a team sport
Our Responsible Technology Principles acknowledge that accountability is a team sport. In parallel with our report, we have also updated our No BS Guide to Responsible AI Governance and Responsible Technology Review Template to reflect our lessons from hundreds of internal reviews of AI products and use cases. These resources provide a deeper look at how we make responsible AI actionable at Atlassian. We invite you to join us by applying the practices we use when deploying new technologies across your organization.
