Im China der Song-Dynastie (13. Jahrhundert) befreit Marschall Hong die Seelen von 108 Rebellen aus früheren Zeiten, die einst in einem Tempel versiegelt worden sind. Zugleich hat im Land ein korrupter Beamter namens Gao Qiu die Macht an sich gerissen. Während er den Kaiser mit weltlichen Freuden beschäftigt, beuten er und seine Komplizen das Volk aus. Angesichts dieser Ungerechtigkeiten erheben sich immer mehr Helden in ganz China. Insgesamt 108 - darunter Song Jiang, Lin Chong und Lu Zhishen - versammeln sich im Liangshan Po, um Gao Qiu und seinen Schergen das handwerk zu legen.
