Sorry, Deadpool: your R-rated raunch didn’t impress the grown-ups table this time. (Fingers crossed for the sequel.) Instead, Loving—the critically acclaimed drama about an interracial relationship and a subsequent Supreme Court case, starring Oscar contenders Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton—will be given the top honor at the AARP’s annual Movies for Grownups Awards.
In the acting department—where only actors age 50 and above are considered—Fences was a home run, with Denzel Washington winning best actor and Viola Davis winning best supporting actress. (Ah, how many acceptance speeches will she have to knock out before Oscar day?)
Annette Bening’s lauded performance in 20th Century Women earned her the best-actress award. Jeff Bridges earned the best-supporting-actor win for his role in Hell or High Water, another movie beloved by dads of all stripes.
There was also love for La La Land, which nabbed the best–comedy/musical award. That whimsical tale, directed by the frustratingly young Damien Chazelle, will likely provide a round of déjà vu for fans this Sunday. It’s nominated for a similar award at the Golden Globes and seems like the surefire winner. It also has a good chance of picking up best picture at the Oscars later this year, though Moonlight is still a major front-runner. (Surprisingly, the critically acclaimed drama directed by Barry Jenkins didn’t get any attention from the AARP.)
The AARP awards will be presented on February 6 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.
