A big debut
April 7: With $157 million domestic and $144 million overseas, the film brought in a total $301 million for its global opening weekend. Minecraft broke the record for best domestic opening weekend for any video-game movie. That honor was previously held by The Super Mario Bros. Movie, with $146.4 million back in 2023. A Minecraft Movie is also the best opening weekend for any movie this year, and the biggest opening since Deadpool & Wolverine.
The film far exceeded expectations for its opening weekend, in something of a reverse Snow White. As part of the Minecraft promotional machine, Jack Black returned to SNL for a critically praised episode, and Jennifer Coolidge is rekindling a romance with a former paramour, Swedish actor Rafael Edholm. Coolidge dropped his name at a Swedish junket for the film, and Edholm responded asking her to visit Sweden and peep all the beautiful scenery. Maybe in a White Lotus ski-season dream sequence?
Minecraft is the biggest movie of 2025
April 13: It’s a Passover miracle. In its second week at the box office, A Minecraft Movie has become the highest-grossing film of 2025 so far. “A Minecraft Movie arrived like the cavalry in the wake of a very slow month of March for theaters,” senior Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian told Variety. “This is great news in the run up to the start of the summer movie season.” The other big movie out this weekend is an animated Jesus movie starring Kenneth Branagh, Uma Thurman, Mark Hamill, and Pierce Brosnan. And yet, Chicken Jockey is the movie biz’s messiah.
