Taking control of AI

Artificial intelligence is a rapidly evolving field that is affecting every aspect of our lives, including education. It is incumbent on us to add our voices to help shape and develop AI to ensure it is used to support teaching and learning, not to hurt us and our profession.

A needed break

With the new ban on internet-enabled personal electronic devices in New York public schools, we are not taking anything away from our students — instead, we are giving something back. We are giving them back their ability to focus, and we are giving them back the chance to have meaningful face-to-face conversations with their friends.



Let our students go

Two New York City high school students have been detained by federal immigration enforcement agents following what should have been routine immigration hearings. Although these arrests did not take place on school property, they have nonetheless been deeply felt in our school communities. 


One big, ugly bill

President Donald Trump’s so-called “One Big, Beautiful Bill,” which the U.S. House of Representatives passed on May 22 and is now under consideration in the Senate, would spell disaster for public education and critical social services including Medicaid and food stamps, all in service of a whopping $4.5 trillion in tax cuts.

Class size milestone

This April, close to 90% of the more than 750 schools that applied for money to lower class sizes found out that they would receive some or all the funding they sought. It was a milestone in our years-long fight to make smaller class sizes a reality in every school.


Razing the U.S. DOE

The new administration has taken a hammer to the U.S. Department of Education, wreaking destruction that is sure to hurt the nation’s public schools and students.
