These audio examples accompany the ‘Depth Of Field’ workshop article from SOS April 2025 issue, discussing the use of three reverb treatments.

Here you’ll find a couple of audio files I made to illustrate the technique. Listen to the MP3 SoundCloud files or download and audition the hi-res WAV files in your own DAW.

It’s cut from a track of the upcoming album by famous Colombian rock band Doctor Krápula (feat. brass and vocals by Argentinian superstars Los Autenticos Decadentes). I chose this one specifically because it not only has a very dense arrangement with many different instruments, but is also very fast. Yet, the technique doesn’t clutter up the track, but gives it a nice sense of depth — which is what it’s all about.

Doctor Krapula - Venimos - DRY

DRY means just that, no effects or ambience whatsoever on the entire mix.

Doctor Krapula - Venimos - FX

FX are the ‘special sauce’ effects like delays, flanging, pitch shifting and a little snare verb.

Doctor Krapula - Venimos - AMB full stereo

AMB full stereo is the technique with AMB A, B and C all in full width.

Doctor Krapula - Venimos - AMB narrowing stereo

AMB narrowing stereo has the panning as shown in the article, moving in from A to C and tightening the virtual room. You’ll notice some obvious automation on the AMB track to lift the chorus and dry up the verses which is one of the technique’s biggest benefits.

Have fun listening and playing around with the different versions.
