Mr. Mayor: Season 1 Reviews
It's telling that the show's most relatable characters are two minimally fleshed-out aides who would rather be somewhere else.

Tina Fey and Robert Carlock created the series, but you'd never know it. It's part bland workplace comedy (set at the mayor's office) and part unfunny political satire.

Mr. Mayor feels more fully formed and sure of itself straight out of the gate, and it hasn't left as much room for improvement.

Though it's not quite as good as 30 Rock, the stars' repartee has a familiar ring, and their show will likely last longer.

Has some very funny moments, and a growing chemistry among its ensemble.

The lack of grasp on its own voice, despite worthy actors in its ensemble, makes Mr. Mayor feel like a jumbled-up version of several previous comedies but hopefully with room to grow as the season progresses.

Not only does the new NBC sitcom see Tina Fey and Co. decamp from New York to Los Angeles, but it also sees their comedy at its most hopeful...

To me it's like a show that wants to be a combination of 30 Rock and Parks [and Recreation], but lacks the charm of the latter.

If anyone other than Danson were playing the mayor, it might be challenging to root for an old white man who won political office without doing any of the homework that was required.

I'm not sure it's saying anything about the maladies of modern society; it's just griping that they exist.

Because they didn't attack the political angles with more edge, Danson's character is nothing more than the same kind of slightly bungling boss that has been a part of sitcoms for decades.

Most of the framework is borrowed from elsewhere, and most of the offensive-but-not-really banter is too toothless to work as real critique. It's funny but isn't lasting or really impactful.

NBC has a winner on its hands with "Mr. Mayor."

Danson doesn't have to be high to elevate the material, but hey, it also doesn't hurt.

While occasionally funny, Mr. Mayor fails to instill a vote of confidence in the future of the series.

Danson has found his light and is waiting comfortably in it for the rest of the show to catch up. I can wait too.

What is the series about, after all? It's hard to say -- kind of about politics, kind of about LA, kind of about family, and kind of about political correctness. It all still feels like a random, undefined vehicle for some brisk, sharp jokes.

Ms. Hunter and Mr. Danson, who come out of disparate regions of metonymical Hollywood, work well off each other, and with a cast that promises great things.

Thankfully, Danson elevates even the more banal gags, and remains good company if nothing else. There's also something vaguely reassuring about having him back Thursdays on NBC.

Mr. Mayor is disappointing -- but disappointments happen. The great surprise of the show, given the talent involved, is the degree to which it's an unpleasant hang.
