President Trump to hold campaign rally in Grand Rapids

LANSING, Mich. — President Donald Trump is scheduled to come to Grand Rapids for a ‘Make America Great Again’ rally as the 2020 Presidential election season begins.

With more than a year and a half before the actual election in November 2020, candidates are starting the campaign season early. Michigan is expected to play a critical role in the presidential election and Trump is starting his visits early.

The rally would be held Thursday March 28, 2019, at Van Andel Arena, according to Trump’s website. Doors open at 4 p.m. with the event slated to start at 7 p.m. The event would be free to the public, but participants must register for tickets. The event would be Trump’s sixth event in Grand Rapids since running for president in 2016.

Trump’s visit is not the only 2020 election race visit in March. On Monday, March 18, Democratic hopeful and New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is expected to stop in Michigan.

Gillibrand joins a packed Democratic field. U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont has declared his candidacy for president after falling short of the Democratic nomination in 2016 to Hillary Clinton. Former Joe Biden has buzz surrounding him for a possible bid too, with an official announcement expected soon.

Other declared candidates include: former Colorado governor John Hickenlooper; Washington Governor Jay Inslee; Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey, Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota and Sen. Kamala Harris of California; Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii and former U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julian Castro.
