there have been 13 hijackings in the history of indian civil aviation, all involving indian airlines aircraft. seven were carried out by groups with links to the isi and six, by groups or individuals. * on january 30,1971, hashim and ashraf quereshi of the jklf, hijacked ganga, a fokker friendship aircraft of ia, after it had taken off from srinagar for jammu.
it was taken to lahore. on february 1, they released the crew and passengers. a day later, they blew up the aircraft. * between september 29, 1981, and august 24, 1984, the dal khalsa, a sikh terrorist organisation, hijacked four ia aircraft and took them to lahore. the hijackers of september 29,1981, were overpowered by pakistani commandoes. in 1982, the zia regime refused permission to two hijacked planes to land in lahore and forced them back to amritsar, where the hijacking was terminated. a fourth ia plane was hijacked by the sikh terrorists to lahore on august 24,1984. zia persuaded them to go away to dubai where the hijacking was terminated. * on december 24, 1999, ic-184 from kathmandu to delhi was hijacked. passengers and crew were released on december 31 after the demand for the release of masood azhar, jailed harkat ul-mujahidden leader was accepted. but one passenger was killed.
