As Leader of the Vaccine Uptake and Clinical trials Group, MCRI, Margie's research focuses on vaccine effectiveness, confidence and uptake, particularly amongst priority populations and in low resource settings, and on effective risk communication. In Australia, she is a member of the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) and chair of the Social Science Advisory Board and a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee, National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance (NCIRS).
She is committed to efforts to improve child health and vaccine confidence and uptake globally and in the Asia Pacific Region and works closely with DFAT to provide technical immunisation support for the region. She is Deputy Chair, Australian Regional Immunisation Alliance (ARIA), on the steering committee for Melbourne Children’s Global Health and Associate Dean International, University of Melbourne. During the pandemic, Margie worked closely with the Commonwealth and Victorian State Governments on the COVID-19 rollout, focusing on optimising uptake for priority populations. She is passionate about effective science communication, working closely with the media to communicate about child health issues and vaccines.
