I am an emeritus distinguished professor (and museum curator), retired from the University of Florida (and Florida Museum). I was a Program Officer at the National Science Foundation from 2009 to 2010. I am the author of more than 200 peer-reviewed publications, mostly about fossil vertebrates, and the books "Broader Impacts of Science on Society" (Cambridge, 2019) and "Fossil Horses" (Cambridge, 1992). I also have been fortunate during my career to participate on about 50 NSF-funded projects, with 40 of these as the lead investigator. In 2022 I received the "Broader Impacts Champion" Award from ARIS (Advancing Research Impacts on Society). A Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Geological Society of America, and Paleontological Society, I was President of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology from 1986 to 1988, and President of the Paleontological Society from 2018 to 2020.
