Urafune @ Bandobashi Negi Chashu Cold Ramen ¥900 Gyoza (5 pieces) ¥370 Spicy Grilled Meat ¥650 Oolong Highball ¥380 → ¥200 *Happy Hour from 5 PM to 8 PM This is a classic local Chinese restaurant located on Iida-dori, heading from Bandobashi Station towards the University Hospital, in business for over 60 years. A few years ago, during the local Chinese food boom, it was featured in the media and became a popular spot. The highlight was the Negi Chashu bowl, and its cold ramen version has become a summer favorite. I've enjoyed visiting this place for day drinking since my younger days, but due to its popularity, it became almost fully booked during lunch and non-smoking, which made it less relaxing to hang out, so I hadn’t gone there in a while. On this day, my wife and I aimed for our desired local Chinese spot but couldn’t get in, so we decided to try our luck with dinner, hoping to relax a bit more. They have a Happy Hour with highballs and Oolong highballs for just ¥200! I had no idea they started this—what a steal! We started with the gyoza. The filling had a lot of meat, spilling out from the skin. (Laughs) I like this slightly messy style—very charming! The grilled meat had a bold umami flavor with seasoning making it salty yet delicious. It was spicier than it looked, perfect for pairing with drinks. The cold Negi Chashu was as impressive as ever, piled high with green onions—a magnificent mountain of leeks. The combo of seasoning and spiciness created a double punch of delicious, spicy leeks. The noodles are smooth, high-hydration Chinese-style noodles, which paired nicely with the tangy sauce, making them easy to slurp up. Since the noodles tend to disappear first, I take my time enjoying the flavorful spicy leeks while sipping. Evenings feel more homey and relaxed, and I highly recommend enjoying drinks during Happy Hour! By the way, they used to have a secret menu item with curry yakisoba topped with mayo that was quite popular. I wonder if they still serve it? I’ll ask next time! It was a great meal!
