A must-visit restaurant in Kyoto with high satisfaction
Enjoyable Course at the Counter Seats
The restaurant is located in a narrow alley next to Ganko Sushi on Sanjo Kiyamachi. They have two seating times at 17:00 and 19:30. Since the 19:30 reservation starts for everyone at the same time, I arrived a bit early at 19:15, but it was too soon and the entrance to the alley was still closed. Arriving 5 minutes early is just fine. The 10-course meal starts all at once. The young chef is friendly and has the appearance of a young theater actor. Each of the 10 dishes was thoughtfully prepared, and I left feeling completely satisfied. Everything was delicious. This place has the feel of a refined, high-end Kyoto-style izakaya rather than a sophisticated Kyoto cuisine restaurant. The hand-rolled eel and burdock seaweed rolls were delightful, without any rice in the middle. The highlight was the seasonal clay pot rice at the end of the meal. Refills are available, and you can change the flavors, which is so much fun. The first serving was enjoyed as is. There are four variations to try: with katsuobushi butter, egg yolk, and yudashi chazuke. You don’t have to finish the rice completely; you can leave some in the bowl and request a flavor change. When I asked if the couple was running the restaurant, I learned that the woman in a chef's coat is not his wife but a staff member. The owner, who manages multiple establishments including izakayas and an onigiri shop, is different. This lovely spot offers a more casual way to enjoy Kyoto cuisine without the formalities, and it will likely become popular, making reservations difficult in the future. I’d definitely recommend this restaurant to friends visiting Kyoto. At a great price of JPY 6,600, it’s easy to introduce. They change the seasonal ingredients, so there is no set schedule for menu changes. Thank you for the wonderful time. I will definitely be back!

Consistently delicious and great value. For JPY 6600, you can truly enjoy your meal here. The restaurant has 10 counter seats and operates in two shifts: at 5 PM and 7 PM. Interestingly, there seem to be quite a few customers from the Kansai region. Kyoto has the highest number of Michelin-starred restaurants in Japan, so if you're willing to spend over JPY 20000 in the evening, there are plenty of great places to choose from. However, this establishment allows you to casually enjoy Kyoto cuisine without needing to spend that much, making it a favorite of mine. The chef is as charming as always, with a youthful, theatrical vibe, and he’s very friendly in conversation. The seasonal clay pot rice at the end is a highlight, with four ways to enjoy it: 1. As is 2. With butter and soy sauce, or katsuobushi 3. With marinated egg yolk 4. As dashi chazuke (rice in broth) I highly recommend trying all four varieties! The butter katsuobushi and the marinated egg yolk are especially good! I’ll definitely come back. It was a great meal.
