The opening day |
2020.5.18 |
On the second day of my Hiroshima trip, July 30, 2022, after having breakfast at my hotel, I visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial (Atomic Bomb Dome) for the first time since my high school field trip. Afterwards, I headed to Kure by rental car, enjoying a battleship cruise and visiting the Yamato Museum (laughs). For lunch that day, I debated whether to find a place in Kure, but eventually I decided to return close to the hotel and drink somewhere nearby. I ended up at "Micchan Ohtaya Teppancho". I've heard of Micchan, famous for okonomiyaki, even myself, so I thought it would be a quite popular spot. However, perhaps because it was around 4 PM, it was fairly empty (sweat). We were seated at the table in the far right corner and each ordered a drink. I think I had a draft beer. Hiroshima's okonomiyaki restaurants have a strong image of having teppan (iron griddle) tables where you can eat piping hot food, so I felt a bit off since it wasn't like that... but maybe because I had been drinking since this morning, it didn't bother me too much (silly me). The dishes we shared included... okonomiyaki (probably soba, meat, and egg), tonpei-yaki, yakisoba, bite-sized gyoza, grilled chicken salt skewers, and grilled scallops in foil. It was served on plates, so unfortunately it wasn't piping hot, but in my opinion, every dish was of a high level of deliciousness. The yakisoba was tasty, but the okonomiyaki was definitely the best (happy). Once I got home, I checked Micchan's website, but this location wasn't listed, so it seems like it's not a directly managed store (sweat). Maybe it’s a franchise? However, since okonomiyaki is something I don't eat often, if it doesn't have to be on a teppan table, this might be a hidden gem if it’s quiet (laughs). It was a great meal. I heard there’s a directly managed store in Tokyo's Shimbashi and Solamachi, so next time I want to visit the directly managed store and compare the flavors.
