I've been curious about Menya Garyu for a while now. It's a bit far from both my home and workplace, somehow I never got the chance to visit. This time, I happened to be in the area during lunchtime, so I changed my plans to eat in Hakodate city and dropped by. The interior is surprisingly spacious, which seems good for families. For solo diners, there’s a "concentration counter" (laughs). I wonder if they pay a patent fee for that? (^_^;) The menu is extensive—there are so many options! It's hard to know what to recommend, but for now, I’ll go with the first item listed: "Chicken Bone Salt" for JPY 600. Of course, that won't be enough, so I also ordered half a fried rice for JPY 300. The food arrived in under 10 minutes. Alright, let’s dig in! The broth isn’t very transparent, but chicken isn’t overpowering, and the seasoning is just right. It’s not too fatty, so it’s quite light. The noodles are medium-thin and curly, which is quite firm for Hakodate style. For some reason, they don’t go down easily. (^_^;) The chashu (braised pork) is large and just the right firmness. This is delicious! As for the half fried rice, it doesn’t really feel like "half." It's more like two-thirds of a serving! The balance between being fluffy and moist is good. There’s no weird oily smell; it’s tasty fried rice. In fact, this fried rice feels like it’s a side to the ramen! (laughs) It would be nice if they had half ramen options instead. (^_-)-☆ It was a delightful meal; thanks for the treat! Next time, I’ll definitely take on the tonkotsu soup!
