I tried to go drinking here before but couldn’t get in, so I decided to try again. This is Yakitori Tengu no Kakurega. It seems to be one of the most popular yakitori places in Matsuyama right now. The tengu (goblin) statue is a landmark. The lack of a visible sign adds to the hidden charm of the place. I went with a couple of friends, and even though it was just before 7 PM on a weekday, we were let in. What a stroke of luck!\(^-^)/ We entered through a corridor and opened the door. True to its name, it definitely has a secret base vibe. We were shown to a seat at the back, sitting on a sunken kotatsu. The kitchen is right in the middle. After we settled in, more and more customers started arriving, even though it wasn’t the weekend—what a lively atmosphere! (°Д°;) We were served a side dish of shrimp and salmon roe set in jelly. It was a bit tricky to eat, so a spoon would’ve been nice. (^ - ^; I only planned to eat, but I couldn’t resist the drinks… I went for a highball. (^ - ^; Despite the crowd, the food came out quickly after we ordered. And the portions were generous! As for the yakitori, if a well-done steak is your standard, this was more on the medium side. I apologize for the vague description; I just have to say the grilling was absolutely perfect. That’s probably what makes this place so popular. More people kept flowing in. The tsukune (chicken meatballs) and the chicken breast with mentaiko (spicy cod roe) were particularly delicious! (*´ω`*) The tsukune had a slightly gooey texture inside, while the chicken breast was wrapped around mentaiko, which remained perfectly half-cooked even after being grilled. We finished off with TKG (tamago kake gohan: rice with raw egg). It came with nameko mushroom soup, which was amazing! ⤴⤴ I had never added anything to my egg rice before, but with green onions and bonito flakes provided, I mixed them together. It turned out to be absolutely wonderful! What a new discovery!\(^-^)/ I can definitely see why this place is gaining popularity. One of my friends mentioned that he comes here occasionally, and it’s always packed. They say it can be hard to make reservations on Fridays and Saturdays. (°Д°;) Without a doubt, I’ll be coming back for sure! Yakitori Tengu no Kakurega 089-931-1009 2-5-17 Sanbancho, Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture
