A great spot for a mom's gathering featuring Taiwan's famous soup dumplings
Taiwan's xiaolongbao has many delicious places to choose from. I've heard that the famous original store in Taiwan is great, but I haven't been there yet. However, I remember enjoying the Japanese branch in Ebisu quite a bit. I heard there's a new branch opening in Seijo Gakuenmae, so I quickly made a reservation and went there. Since it was a weekday lunch, the female patron ratio was 95%! When making a reservation, you specify your course. I chose the Mini Lunch Course (JPY 2180), which includes 2 types of appetizers, 3 kinds of xiaolongbao, boiled lettuce with shark fin and egg white sauce, shrimp spring rolls with sesame-mayo, and either Taiwanese lu rou fan or lu rou noodles. Initially, the floor staff were inexperienced at the opening, but after more than two weeks, the service was excellent on this visit. My husband was impressed when we slightly tilted the lid on the empty teapot, and within a minute, new tea arrived without us having to say a word. They must have undergone some on-the-job training! (laughs) For appetizers, we had kombu with roe, and stir-fried green beans with dried shrimp. The small afternoon tea-style service was adorable. There were some uneven stir-frying issues, but the seasoning was good. The xiaolongbao came in three varieties: plain, oolong tea, and mentaiko. So delightful! I wish I could have had double the amount! These xiaolongbao were bursting with juicy soup! ♡ The shark fin was hard to distinguish as there was so little, but the crunch of the lettuce was nice. It was slightly under-seasoned, so I added some soy sauce. The spring rolls were made with plump shrimp paste and were very delicious. The sauce drizzled on top had a strong, dango-like flavor. The accompanying salad could use a bit more dressing. Ideally, it should be tossed for the best flavor. The lu rou fan was packed with bamboo shoots and tasted great. It was a bit disappointing that the soy sauce egg (commonly known as ajitama as a ramen topping) was served cold. The yolk was at the perfect soft-boiled consistency, and while I wouldn’t want to heat it further, it would have been tastier at room temperature. The course didn’t include dessert. The portion size was just right for women, but might be a little insufficient for men. It's a newly opened place with a neat interior. I can imagine it becoming fully booked well in advance during the school observation days at Seijo Gakuen.

One of the second most famous places for Xiao Long Bao in Taiwan. Wasn’t the first branch in Japan located in Ebisu? This Seijo location, while not very prominent, is quite lively. I recommend making a reservation. They offer several course options. I ordered the lunch course, Sakura (JPY 3980). The first appetizer arrived in an interesting dish that doesn’t require much table space. It feels like a mini afternoon tea set. The shrimp mayonnaise is delicious~. So is the steamed chicken. This is what I wanted to eat! Xiao Long Bao. The red one is tomato. It's served with ginger and black vinegar. Steamer baskets keep coming out one after another. They are small portions, but it’s fun to try a variety. The shrimp chili has a spicy punch. For the finale, I chose fried rice over noodles. It comes with a shark fin sauce. The shark fin is minimal, but the sauce is really good. For dessert, there’s something more like milk pudding than almond tofu, along with freshly fried sesame balls. Ah, my family loves this! Next to the register at checkout, there are frozen take-away items available. Purchasing some for home is a great idea!
